Is this just since the Blackpool South line was closed?

I've seen trains that terminate at Preston from the south use it before the Blackpool line blockade. (note I've used the term "blockade" just in case anyone thinks that the Blackpool South line has been closed permanently ;) )

Quite normal for 4c to be used whenever there's a closure affecting Preston-Kirkham. Only restriction is length: IIRC a single 185 is the longest train that will fit. There was also a time when all Ormskirks used it. Overnight stabling can also happen.

As a kid I remember Ormskirks using 3C but not 4C, I guess it was earlier than that (early 90s)

both 3c&4c will just fit 2 150 units in but the driver has to be prepared to get right up to and be hard against the stop blocks so that the cab is level with and not past the exit signal

I've taken trains in and out of 3c and 4c more times than I care to remember. They're in daily use and have been for years, the Ormskirk service has generally been the most regular user.

It doesn't, I've tried it but it just fits a pair of 142s though. A 185 only just fits the bays.

If memory serves, I'm sure Lime Street services were once very common from the bay platforms, 4C in particular.

yes I know what is in SA but they both measure out longer than that I know we did it before fitment of TPWS grids
it is possable to just fit a class 319 in the platform clear of the TC joint at the signal I was on one from liverpool that got put in there when the service was first extended from Wigan

Who is "we"? At 80m long 4x20m vehicles don't fit the bays. I know this from first hand experience and trapping a train in the opposite bay. I had to set back out into a through platform. Putting a 185 (3x23m) in the bay right up to the buffers only just puts it inside the signal. So if a 185 only just fits then 2x150s, a 319 or a 350 certainly won't fit. Just because you *may* just clear the circuit doesn't mean it fits as the train must be fully accommodated.

I thought there was a minimum laid down distance to be left between the train and buffer stops

Can the driver still clearly see the signal in that case?

Standing 2x150s or a 319 as claimed puts the outgoing cab ahead of the signal so no you can't see it. It also stands over the catch points which can't reopen locking the route against a unit standing in the other bay preventing it departing.
