There is presently a Colne train in it..first time I’ve seen a passenger service from there. How often is it used?

Is this just since the Blackpool South line was closed?
There was also a time when all Ormskirks used it. Overnight stabling can also happen.
Quite normal for 4c to be used whenever there's a closure affecting Preston-Kirkham. Only restriction is length: IIRC a single 185 is the longest train that will fit. There was also a time when all Ormskirks used it. Overnight stabling can also happen.
both 3c&4c will just fit 2 150 units in but the driver has to be prepared to get right up to and be hard against the stop blocks so that the cab is level with and not past the exit signal
Correct - but the bays are too short to be used by 319s.If memory serves, I'm sure Lime Street services were once very common from the bay platforms, 4C in particular.

Can the driver still clearly see the signal in that case?"we" were network rail S&T
Who is "we"? At 80m long 4x20m vehicles don't fit the bays. I know this from first hand experience and trapping a train in the opposite bay. I had to set back out into a through platform. Putting a 185 (3x23m) in the bay right up to the buffers only just puts it inside the signal. So if a 185 only just fits then 2x150s, a 319 or a 350 certainly won't fit. Just because you *may* just clear the circuit doesn't mean it fits as the train must be fully accommodated.
I thought there was a minimum laid down distance to be left between the train and buffer stops
