Afternoon all,

On Saturday 8th July I hope to be travelling from Leyland to Barrow-in-Furness and back. Normally this would be a fairly straightforward journey, changing at Preston and sometimes Lancaster. I also identified a split at Arnside to lower the cost.

However, with the 8th being a strike day, there is a high chance there will be no trains stopping at Leyland (no surprises there, there's hardly any anyway, but that's off topic); and a reduced service along the route. I'm looking to arrive at Barrow at approximately 12pm-1pm, departing at approximately 5.30pm. I could also travel to/from Buckshaw Parkway.

If trains were to pass Arnside without stopping, would the split ticket combination still be valid on the basis that the train would usually stop there on a normal day?

Yes, just make sure you buy your tickets before they publish the amended timetable so that you have already formed a contract with them.

If anything runs it will stop at Arnside.

Can't remember what happened on the previous Saturday strike 8th April but previous weekday strikes have only have had 4 trains each way between Lancaster and Barrow with last service 1610 from Barrow. Just to be forewarned.

You might want to hold back booking your tickets until you know what is running. If indeed the train is not stopping at the station you change from one ticket to another, I think it would be reasonable for them to still accept it on the basis that they are running to a special strike timetable.

Enjoy the match ;) I'd also expect anything that does run to stop at Arnside.

If you leave via the main station exit onto Holker Street, The Duke of Edinburgh Pub is opposite you at the traffic lights is a good place to go before the game.

The ground is a 10-15 minute walk straight along Holker Street - turn right out of the station exist and keep going! It is one of the coldest football grounds you could go to so dress for the elements!

There was definitely no evening service from Barrow-in-Furness last time. Be careful - it's not somewhere I would ever wish to get stranded.

Thanks for the directions :) Yes I've heard about how cold it is, hopefully it's not so bad in July!

If you're able to get hold of some back copies of Johnston Press newspapers, or obtain some tokens from other forum members, a Northern day ticket would cover you at £10.

Child tickets £5; a minimum of one adult required, although I don't believe this is stringently enforced at all booking offices.

Timetables are now available on the website,
https://www.northernrailway.co.uk/industrial-action

There is a 1001 from Lancaster, and a 1304.
Last train from Barrow is 1715.

I lack the patience to work out what option from Leyland or Buckshaw are especially as it seems they have screwed up the Man Vic - Blackpool PDF.

Thanks for the link. Looking at that it's actually better for me to go from Lostock Hall! Why that gets an hourly service yet Leyland gets nothing I'll never know. Nothing useful after arriving back at Preston but I can deal with a bus for the last leg. Thanks all. :)

Right then, turns out it's Virgin causing me problems now  They've added Crewe in as a stop on the fast London-Glasgow's; meaning what was a valid 6 minute connection at Lancaster off the 0941 ex-Preston is now a 2 minute invalid connection as it's now the 0945 ex-Preston. Under these circumstances, unless I make the connection (platform 3 to 2 so is doable in 15 seconds really) I will be 3 hours late into Barrow - would I be eligible for delay repay based off the timetable before Virgin altered theirs or am I stumped?

Virgin do not appear to have altered their timetable, the changes are merely possibilities.

The new times are in RealTimeTrains as STP times, with the original ones being under CANcelled. Journey planners also have the altered times.

Ergh they weren't when I looked. Assuming you've already got a ticket there's no reason why compensation wouldn't be available but I would strongly advise you to consider staying at home and applying for a refund. It looks like tomorrow isn't going to be a good day for any kind of travel. Or you could just have 3 hours in Lancaster, it's up to you.

Even if you don't have your ticket yet, buy it and complain. It's completely unacceptable for them to rip up their timetable the evening before and just expect people to replan their lives around their failures.

I made a point of buying my tickets before the timetable change and will make a point of complaining even if I'm not delayed as the whole way they've gone about this is appalling. No doubt they'll throw a strop I've split tickets at Lancaster too.

There's a Wetherspoons in Lancaster so a 3 hour wait is fine by me

FWIW I think you would be entitled to delay repay based on the connection being vslid.

Now let's look at likely scenarios to see whether the retiming by 4 minutes will make a difference.

1. The VT is RT into Lancaster. No problem either way.

2. The VT is 3-4 minutes late into LAN. Normally no problem. Tomorrow it arrives at 1001 or 1002. What will Preston PSB with the 1001 to BIF? Let it go right time and delay the VT at Carnforth, or hold it at LAN? I would be exceedingly surprised if the former option were taken.

3. The VT is more than 10 minutes late. Either way, you might have missed your connection, and been entitled to delay repay. Or it might have been held.

In your circumstances, I would stick with my plans.

As it turned out the 0945 was late so I jumped on the 0954 to Edinburgh, got to Lancaster 9 minutes after the Barrow train but taxies were laid on. Got into Barrow 46 minutes late.
