Good evening all!
I'm just looking for some info on my pts course.

I've recently secured a fixed term contract as a RHTT operator subject to passing my pts.

Is the test difficult?
Is it open or closed book?

I'm assuming there is classroom learning where you will find out the info to pass as long as you pay attention?

All help appreciated!

Andy

If it’s the same pts test across the board it’s a doddle , it’s the only test I don’t do revision for.

I did my PTS last month for my job which requires it and I can answer the questions as it affected me but should be same for you:

Firstly you be in a small group where you introduce yourself and then you watch a number of videos which can be upsetting eg trackside fatality and the boy coming into contact with 25000 volts AC via a balloon both are hard hitting.

You should also be given a side show or video explaining all the different terms of the trackside eg 4 foot, 6 foot, 10 foot etc and what the different signs mean but also points like how to ask for a block to stop trains in case of a obstruction etc...

Your tutor should also take you around the yard and ask you to name parts such as how many volts of electricity does the OHL carry and where's the 4ft etc

It's a 25 question exam, all multiple choice and the pass mark is minimum of 23 I believe but if you pay attention to the videos and to your tutor then you have no problems.

It really isn't difficult and it lasts for two years instead of the old one year period, this is due to covid.

Any more questions, I'm happy to help.

I always struggled remembering what the lineside phone boxes looked like for some reason.
The way I remember is that lineside phone is 2 words, and that the sign is the one with 2 lines (making an X). But everyone finds what works for them to retain info.

They’ve slimmed down the amount of phones over the years I recall. When I first did a PTS in 2006 there were far more “what is this phone?” Questions.
