Does anyone know of a good pub near Middlesbrough (MBR) station? I'm going with some friends to Whitby and have just over an hour wait at MBR, so maybe time for a quick pint somewhere. Preference for either cider or real ale.

Middlesbrough is probably the worst town in the country for real ale, certainly for its size. However, you are in luck if you don't mind Wetherspoon's. The Isaac Wilson in Wilson Street is a very short walk from the station. Go down the ramp, cross over and under the flyover, over the crossing and turn immediately right and it's 50 metres along.
The best pub in the town for real ale is the Star but it's 10-15 minutes' walk, even if you know where you are going.

If you're a CAMRA member you should have the 50p off vouchers for 'spoons.
There are a couple of local beers which might be on, one is called the Flying Herbert.

Star is good. Although I was heartbroken when I went back recently and its all trendy and rennovated now. The spoons pub is possibly the dirtiest one I've ever been in. But unfortunately it is the only option you have if you want a real ale whilst waiting for a train.

When you get to Whitby. I recommend The Station and The Plough near the station. And most of the pubs over the bridge. Avoid the Dolphin. It is a horrible place. The pub next to the Justin's fudge shop is always a good pint.

The Bridge used to be ok, down to earth; working mans kind of place with a decent pint but is a bit rough now. You can get a decent pint in the Zealand but again this can be a bit rough ( especially on a match day) so the best is going to be the Isaac Wilson, which is the Weatherspoons near the station.
The Navigation is the best pint near the ground but is in the middle of nowhere!

It's a good 4-5 years since the Star was renovated or, rather, demolished and rebuilt. The Bridge, Navigation and Zetland don't do real ale in common with most pubs in the area though the Zetland used to do a decent drop of Samson when it was a Vaux pub but that's a good 15+ years ago now. As an illustration of the area's attitude to decent beer, the Lord Byron, just along from the Bridge, reopened a year or so ago. It's a great-looking pub in a good location but the beer is the same old fizzy or 'smooth' stuff you can get in any pub in Middlesbrough. Not really 'NR General Discussion' is it, this, but hey-ho.
