Between Naples and Salerno, do Italian IC and ICN trains use the inland high speed route (E of Vesuvius) which is evidently the one taken by the Frecciarossa/Italo/other Frecce high speed services, or do they follow the semi-coastal route (W of Vesuvius) like the Regional trains via Pietrarsa and Torre Annunziata?
Thanks in advance

Can't say for certain, and don't know the area,but the times of Frecce, IC and nonstop R are virtually identical, so I am confident that they normally go inland.

On the one occasion I've done that journey (on the Rome-Sicily daytime IC train from Naples) it went inland, behind Vesuvius.

IC do inland in my experience, you need the regionali for the coastal route- it's quite a pleasant route but unfortunately my train had no/defective air con so was a bit hot.

And the Milan-Sicily night train (sleeper) runs inland too, I seem to remember - though it's far from being anything like a Frecce, speed-wise. (Depending on the time of year, it's already light by the time you get to the Naples area on the way south; though there's pleasant coastal scenery during the rest of the way to the ferry crossing, when much of the route runs along the coast.)

Admittedly a good while ago, but I’ve gone both ways on journeys from Napoli Centrale to Paestum (south of Salerno and well worth a visit for anyone wanting to see Greek Temples in Italy). More often via the coast, but at least once inland.

Just back from a week in Naples. We used the coastal line a few times on regional trains (Jazz EMUs), and never saw any ICs there. Some good views of the bay of Naples, Capri and Vesuvius if you can ignore the slightly run down urban landscape of the coastal belt.
We also too IC 723 (destination Sicily) from Naples to Salerno, which took the inland higher speed route.GPS showed top speeds hovering around 100mph/160kph. A more agricultural landscape until the tunnel sections before Salerno, and again views of Vesuvius and the hills around.
Edit: IC723 had a E464 single-ender loco at each end of the 8 coaches when we boarded at at Naples. Forgot to check at Salerno if that was a loco change or push-pull all the way through.

IC723 reverses in Napoli Centrale, so the loco change might have been there.
I mucked up my reservation for the Naples-Sicily run as I forgot about the reversal.
So my pick of the best seat in the house (forward right hand window facing the sea) turned into just about the worst (landwards seat facing backwards). :{
It's a wonderful ride, even so. Could do with some catering though.

Yes, I tried looking for pics of that service online, but couldn’t find anything conclusive.
Our reservations were weird too, coach 2 shown online as the front of the train, which it was leaving Napoli, but our seats were still the wrong side, as if the coach was the wrong way round but in the right position in the train. Wasn’t crowded though.

I have family living in Campania (where both Naples and Salerno are located), and I go to Italy once or twice a year, therefore I am well qualified to answer.

All Intercity services run via the inland high speed line. The Coastal line is only used by stopping regional and metropolitan train services.
