Can anyone tell me why some Diesels have white marks on their wheels, noted of late with the marks: 31's 47's
I have no idea why, bet theres a simple answer
Anyone please?

If you mean lines going out from the centre to the edge of the wheel, I believe someone said to me that it's so they can check if the wheels are turning or not, but im not too sure about that one.

Edit: ah, hang on, I'm thinking of something completely different :lol:

To see if the Traction tyres are still aligned, when the marks are not lined up between the wheel and outer tyre then you can easily tell they are dis-aligned.

All locomotives and multiple units carry these markings, although it can be in the form of a sticker. Fusionrail is right in saying that they are tyreshift markings if they are in line the tyre is ok, if its out of line then the tyre has shifted and the vehicle needs removing from traffic.

The profile isn`t cast on......the wheel and axle are cast as a single unit then the wheel profile is finished off on a wheel lathe I think you will find....hence the name monoblock :)
