Not sure this really belongs in trip planning as it's a side issue about ticket checks, but it's not a "dispute or prosecution" or a "fare issue". Please move if appropriate.
During a trip from Nottingham to Marsden and Huddersfield on Friday, I changed from the Northern 0817 Nottingham to Leeds service onto the Cross Country service to Edinburgh at Chesterfield. In the ten minutes between the Northern service arriving and the XC departing, there was a full ticket check of everyone on the platform by EMR staff.
I've never seen this before, is it common? All tickets were checked on the Northern service anyhow, so is it because the XC service may be so overcrowded** that ticket checks for people who've changed at Chesterfield are sometimes impossible? Is Chesterfield a compulsory ticket area, and does this make any difference in this case? Is it something to do with ticket validity on XC services?
** Although in this case, the XC service was formed of 2x4 coaches, there were some standard seats available and there was even catering in the rear 1st coach.
