Hi I am trying to get a job as a track operative but finding it hard as I have no experience, I have applied through network rail but finding it hard, would it be more of a advantage if I payed for my pts courses and would it give more of a chance to get onto the rail?, thanks Chris.

I did a course through my local college to get me started on the railway 3 years ago tho but i still think they do them.

NVQ level 2 in railway engineering and track maintenance.
If full attendance they also got you a PTS,DNA and track induction.

Then just work for anyone including agencies and work your way up

Thats how i started now I'm currently work for the welding division at Volker Rail

But its not easy and a lot of cancelled and one shift a week (every sat night) to start with whilst your a blue hat unless you get very lucky but I'm glad i joined the rail

But most important bit its not just a job its a life style working on the railway.

Thanks for the advise , I will check with my local college to see if they do a course, I'm finding it very hard to get on the rail all you want is some one to give you a chance, thanks again. Chris.

Another big big big advantage is to be able to drive and own a car but once again it is hard to start with if your needing the money has it takes time to get in with the agency companies but keep an eye out on the big sub-contractor web career pages because they do advertise a lot

And if you did pay for you own PTS you still need a track induction course aswell if you plan on getting a rail job which involves you doing a task to the rail its self.

I do drive and own a car which is a advantage, I was just unsure on what courses to take if I payed myself to take them just to try and get my foot on the ladder even as track maintenance then work up from there, but like you said its hard to get in.

Hi Chris,
What is your work xp at the moment? Have you got any skills you can transfer onto the railway i.e brickie or joiner or spark? You then have something the agencies need, and you can get them to pay for your training rather than forking out for it yourself. Keep applying for every job NR advertise, you might get fortunate.
Good luck mate, it's a bark getting your foot in the door but once you are in you can boot it open!
