Gate line Assistance points
Paps are the platform version, rarely seen outside of places like London Waterloo(Platform Assistance points)

Problem with the messroom being a place of safety like other places of apparent safety is that the Staff member often has to fiddle with keys which often in places takes two or more inserts before getting the lock to move. By that time an assailant is on you.
All staff accommodation/mess doors are keypad operated, but your point still stands and has been raised by reps.

With the TSO part do you mean the new GTS concession or the MTR one? I used to see East and West TSOs at Woolwich and Abbey Wood elizabeth line stations, more so Abbey Wood when they'd do a full block with Southeastern Revenue teams
Im referring to the current MTR-TfL agreement. I do hope things change with GTS coming in, a lot of CEAs are hopeful of new measures which as @357 said; staff have been requesting for years.

I’m not aware of TSOs on the ABX branch, however I may be mistaken.

Utterly sickening news, sadly symptomatic of the behaviour problems that are all too common across public transport and in wider society.

The deepest sympathy to friends and family.

Ah yes, often the TSOs were East and West TSOs, I used to regularly on those Blocks, see a blonde haired TSO named Adam(who is now a DCEM) from the west at those Blocks. They really only came over after mainly covering their own areas first.

Terribly sad news to see today - my thoughts and prayers to the family, friends, and colleagues of the gentleman who died.
I work for TFL and am very saddened to hear that one of us was killed while doing their job. From now on, I will not challenge anyone trying to blag a free ride, especially when we are often on our own on busy gate lines.
I completely understand your position. My local station is probably very much on the sleepier side of things as far as Elizabeth line gatelines are concerned, and some of the behaviour from passengers there is appalling. I can't even begin to imagine how difficult it must be for you and your colleagues, both in general with despicable behaviour absolutely rife, and in the light of this incident.

On the East, gateline staff normally position by the SCU boxes. Place of safety is the messroom.
I first recall raising this an an issue under National Express East Anglia. At one gate line the place of safety was over 100m away up three flights of stairs.

I had a white van driver try to assault me a few weeks ago because he didn't like me parking my bus in a bua stop to wait time.

This is really sad news. Staff assaults are more common than people think, it's just not widely reported in the media - if ever. There been at least 3 serious assaults in the space of a month within a 30 mile radius , 2 involving staff members sustaining cuts and bruises after beatings and one which involved a knife but thankfully it wasn't used to injure anyone. The BTP are stretched so thin they cant keep up with it all. Harsh sentences for those caught are needed as a deterrent.

As there is an active criminal case underway the Forum Staff feel it best to lock this thread for the time being. Once the case reaches its conclusion we will of course look to re-open it for discussion.

In the interim I of course extend my condolences to family and friends of Jorge Ortega as do the rest of the Forum Staff. Everyone who goes to work should always come home again at the end of the day and its even more shocking when the reason is something as hideous as this.

Edit: A Jorge Ortega Memorial Fund has been launched

Hi, my name is Dayle Napier. I am speaking on behalf of the Ortega family.

On Wednesday night, 4th December 2024, Jorge Ortega, 61, who worked as a customer experience assistant for Elizabeth Line. A dedicated member of the railway community for over 24 years was attacked at Ilford station and was taken to hospital with serious head injuries but later passed away from the senseless attack on Friday evening, 6th December 2024. He has lost his life simply for carrying out his job. He was only a couple of hours away from going home to his wife.

Jorge is my friend's dad, and he also was my colleague. I am hoping that people can support his family in this hard and tragic time by donating whatever you can to help give this most incredible man I have ever had the pleasure of meeting a wonderful funeral and help support the family.

"Our dad was the most loving person, the kindest soul you could have the pleasure of meeting. Everyone who has met our dad or who has ever worked with him over the years will tell you this. He had a brilliant mind, enjoyed cooking, loved drawing, and was highly skilled in art. He was an amazing family man and would always put other people first. He loved his grandchildren, and in turn, they adored our dad. He was totally devoted to our mum and loved her beyond what words can describe. Having been together for over 38 years, he is an example of what a great man should be like and a role model that we highly look up to. We can only hope to be like him. Dad is and will always be in our hearts."

Thank you for reading the Ortega's family's heartbreaking story, and thank you so much if you can help in any way. If you are unable to contribute, you can help by sharing this on all social platforms. Thank you again on behalf of the Ortega family.

Obviously this is an ongoing case so we’ll keep it locked for the time being but a man has now been charged with murder.

A man has been charged with murder following the death of an Elizabeth line worker at a station in east London.
Jorge Ortega, 61, was taken to hospital with serious head injuries after the British Transport Police (BTP) was called to Ilford station at about 20:50 GMT on 4 December. He died in hospital two days later.
Ayodele Jambgadi, of Kingston Road in Ilford, has also been charged with affray. The 28-year-old had previously been accused of grievous bodily harm but his charges have now been amended, according to the BTP.
The defendant is due to appear at Inner London Crown Court on 7 January.

He was taken to hospital but later died following the incident which happened at around 9pm.

Ayodole Jamgbadi, 28, from Ilford, appeared in custody at Inner London Crown Court via a video link from Pentonville Prison on Tuesday charged with murder and affray.
