Hi all!
You thought this would be just a simple thread 8-)

I was scratching @yorkie’s brain on a walk the other day with this idea, and I thought I would ask the forum.

I am looking to travel from Reading to Bristol on Monday (the 12th) but via a very silly route - up through Birmingham and Shrewsbury and down the Heart of Wales to Swansea, because I haven’t been down that way before, and it’s meant to be beautiful! And of course, it would be the first day that we’re allowed to travel into Wales from England...

I know that a very good itinerary exists on 10:15 XC from Reading up to Birmingham International, and then the TfW to Shrewsbury, but I’m really struggling to find a fare that would work here.

I have a 16-25 railcard at my disposal.

Now, I’ve been looking at the advance fares on those dates, and I’m happy with the availability up to Shrewsbury, but the issue is I can’t get any website to give me a fare via the HoW for some reason, as it sends you down to Llandelio (or one of the stations) to go back up the line and go via the Marches.

Would anyone be able to advise a ticketing option here? I would prefer to be on advance legs (if they’re cheaper (ca. £35-40)), but if someone can find a regular walk-up fare for around that price, they’ll get a cookie!

I’d like to think that there’s a gigantic hole in the routing guide somewhere that allows a circular route or something that just helps bring the cost down, but who knows? I certainly don’t.

May the Hunger Games begin! <:D

Worth a punt? Maybe check upcoming engineering work on the TfW website. I've fond memories of the HoW line, leaving on the 5am ex-Shrewsbury wide awake and then Churchill dogging alongside commuters from Llandovery. How they must have enjoyed my snoring! xD

I have seen this one!
Think the day one just about undercuts the fare from Shrewsbury, but I would have to add a few quid to Bristol (any station really, preferably FIT).

So you are saying that you would like to travel on the 14.08 Shrewsbury to Swansea (which is via the heart of Wales line), then from Swansea to either Fulton Abbey Wood or Bristol Temple Meads?

Just buy a Shrewsbury to Swansea Anytime Day Single (via Llandovery) for £19.60 with a railcard, then an Advance from Swansea to Bristol Temple Meads on the 19.22 departure (change at Cardiff and arrive at Bristol at 21.15) for £12.45 (with railcard).

The total is £32.05.

You can get from Reading to Shrewsbury (or Craven Arms) much more cheaply than by going on the 10.15 XC via Birmingham. If you leave Reading on the 10.13 to Newport, then change there for Craven Arms (or Shrewsbury) then an advance with railcard is £24.60.

Giving a grand total of £54.65.

check split fares for the journey from reading - if you split at Banbury you can get some huge savings on the cross country line.
