realtimetrains no longer shows unit numbers

I find it useful as I can pick a train with standard plus.

It does. Have you looked at a MK4 service? Weirdly for many of these the number and set information is redacted. And then when it isn't, the drawing doesn't show.

It only shows the unit number when you're in Detailed mode. Are you in Simple mode perhaps?

It doesn't show the unit numbers for all train operators. Annoyingly (for me), Thameslink is one of those that doesn't.
