Arriva cancelled Ludlow to Manchester trains, so I got a refund for that. So I didn't make the trip.

The return leg to my trip was due to be from Leeds to Kidderminster later that day (a friend offered a lift from Manchester to Leeds).

Is there any chance of the return element being refunded?

Thanks. (I have tried to find out myself without luck)

If your outbound service was cancelled and you chose not to travel with your ticket in both directions, the retailer you bought the ticket from should refund both portions of the ticket if you ask them.

If they are two separate tickets, it may be harder to enforce this right, but contacting the retailer's customer service team explaining the situation should be sufficient to allow a refund.

You may return an unused Ticket to the original retailer or Train Company from whom it was purchased, where you will be given a full refund with no administration fee charged, if you decide not to travel because the train you intended to use is:
  • cancelled, or
  • delayed, or
  • rescheduled from that in Published Timetable of the Day after you have purchased a Ticket or Tickets, or
  • your reservation will not be honoured

Can you provide full details of the ticket(s) held and what your planned itinerary was, and what happened on the day?

@JoeGimlet. Welcome to the forum. Could you possibly clarify how Leeds to Kidderminster is a "return" journey, if you were originally travelling from Ludlow to Manchester? From a rail perspective, these seem to be two separate, standalone, single journeys, and with a non rail gap between Manchester and Leeds?

Hi, Thanks for the replies. Sorry for the delay in getting back as I have been away.

I purchased the tickets via Trainline - so the train operators was not that transparent to me at the time of booking.

Plan. Bus from home to Ludlow. Train from Ludlow to Manchester. Lift from friend from Manchester to Leeds. Day in Leeds. Evening Train from Leeds to Kidderminster (no buses in the evening, so taxi home from Kidderminster - as nearer than Ludlow)

Luckily, before leaving home, I got a message from Trainline saying that trains from Ludlow were cancelled. So I abandoned the trip.

I understand that railwise they were two separate journeys, but as on the same day they were clearly connected. I can understand they were single journeys but to me there was definitely an out and a return!

I did wonder that the fact that they were also different operators may reduce my chances of a refund.

All bought in one transaction?

Knowing the planned itinerary would be useful too.
