I'll be knocking off some stations in the Manchester area soon and am aware of a direct trail (converted old railway line) between these two. How long would it take to walk/cycle between these stations? Is it a well kept path?

:)

This route is called 'The Middlewood Way' and you'll have no problem getting between the two stations as it is a proper trail. Walking could take you 45 mins-1hour, cycling probably 20-30 mins.

I've walked the Middlewood Way from Middlewood down to Macclesfield before. That part is very well kept and easily walked in half a day.

It took us (Nick W, Paul1609 and me) 17 minutes to cycle between the two (Middlewood to Rose Hill). It's straightforward and very direct, much quicker than going by rail. It may take a while to walk though. It could be done in less time than that, particularly heading northbound if the wind is favourable. On the other hand, allow more time if heading southbound because of the slight gradient.

Word of warning - if you're planning on travelling on a weekend out of Piccadilly to Rose Hill the trains are normally very busy and I've seen people with bikes refused access before. If you can I'd reccommend doing it during the week.

Or changing at Romiley could work for you, as the stopper to Rose Hill is usually much quieter there than at Manchester

Middlewood and Romiley are on completely different lines; changing at Piccadilly would be the only option.
