I was travelling on a service from York to Newcastle on a LNER service with a North Country 4 in 8 day Rover. The Guard said that it wasn't valid 'as that Rover is for the Peak District' and I would have to purchase a new ticket. It wasn't until I showed him the map of validity that I had thankfully download onto my phone that he accepted it was valid.

Should I follow this up? In fairness the guard wasn't rude, but he could have ended up costing me a lot if money if I hadn't stood up for myself. What do you guys think?

Absolutely. That guard is not fit to be conducting revenue duties if he doesn't know the validity of products that are valid on his train, and yet insists that passengers should buy a new ticket as a result. If the guard is at all unsure, they have the internet at their disposal - it takes barely a minute to look up the map, so it's not on at all.

I didn't catch his name, but I do know the service, and the stations it happened between, so that should be enough. I'll write an email to LNER.

Agreed. I've had a guard where I showed a Freedom of Severn and Solent between Birmingham and Cheltenham (I had a season covering me between the two to get my into area for the rover but just forgot which I had up showing) and it was accepted but he returned a few minutes later, still very polite and pleasant, and told me that he'd gone away to just confirm the rover validity. I apologised and showed him my season, which he was then fine with. A very good way to deal with it and not at all accusing me of having the wrong ticket when he wasn't sure.

The rover has had a few confused looks as it's one I'm using at the moment, particularly at Preston and Leeds...

On the Virgin trains service today the conductor stared at my rover for about 10 seconds, before confirming it was fine and moving on. I was ready for another validity discussion!

I suspect there may be some confusion with it as the other 'North' rovers are valid either on the East or on the West, not both. Quite a great rover really for the price IMO!

I've had an All Lines Rover challenged as being not valid for travel by staff on XC and the old East Cosst. I've also had food refused on VT using the All Line Rover until I insisted politely and firmly.

On the same trip I was shouted at by a woman on the gateline in Edinburgh.

There is some real ticket ignorance by revenue staff.

On most occasions a chat resolves the issue. The woman at the gateline kept shouting at me so I simply walked off and another member of staff came to apologise.

A very very strange remark by the guard. Definitely follow it up.

I often find guards to be more lenient and accept rovers and rangers with little fuss if they're not familiar with them.

Its normally gateline who get very peculiarly behaved with rovers. Such as at Victoria (Gatwick Express) where the staff member said 'where do you think you're going with that?' I stared up at the big 'Gatwick Express' sign, the display saying 'xx:xx Gatwick Airport only', back at him and said 'where do you think?'

The train was about to leave so I quickly followed up with 'Gatwick Airport, can I have it back now please as the train is ready to go?' and he obliged. I think he was more clueless than malicious.

Had Guildford gateline try to keep my ALR once but that again was them being daft and thinking it was a used single/return.

You'd think the name would be obvious on that one wouldn't you as to where it was valid...
