Scottish Grand Tour rover for a return journey?

I need to travel from Edinburgh to the extremities of the Kyle line and back. For my intended journey, a Scottish Grand Tour rover works out cheaper than buying a return ticket.

However, timings are such that I can't use this ticket for its intended purpose (a circular route) - I'd need to head out and back via Inverness.

Am I right in thinking this would not be a valid use of the ticket?

The National Rail website says "travel in one direction only", and although it contains a confusing condition under the Validity dropdown that it's "Valid in both directions", a search of previous threads suggests this means something else.

The intended route of the ticket is Glasgow/Edinburgh to Kyle, out via Mallaig and Skye, back via Inverness (or vice versa). So going both ways via Inverness would be invalid.

As the ticket has a set route for you to take, 'Valid in both directions' just means it's valid to do the route clockwise or anticlockwise.

If you are aged 50 or over, it would make sense to apply for a Club 50 annual membership (£15) then buy a £17 flat-fare ticket.

The current flat-fare sales period runs until 26 June, with return travel to be completed by 26 July.

The flat-fare tickets are issued as period returns, with outbound validity of 1 day and return within 30 days.

You can catch any ScotRail trains within the ticket validity, you are not tied to specific trains.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions.

Sadly I'm not old enough for Club 50. Here's hoping they release advances for my dates...
