You can book morning, afternoon and evening on EMR Midland Mainline for £16.

Is it likely that the cheapest public advance fare available is a good clue to which train you’ll be given? eg first and last train of the day

I suspect it's a pretty good heuristic, though by no means definitive. Do some experiments and post about the findings!

Thanks! but it’s expensive to book just for an experiment. Somewhere there must be people posting their successes/failures in getting a good train time, apparently not here though!

Is this the deal/offer promoted by Seatfrog? Essentially seems to be a cut-price advance ticket "lucky dip"?

Yes, so called "Secret Fares" are offered by Seatfrog on EMR and TPX services.

It's the same thing as Avanti's Superfares, which also runs on the Seatfrog platform.
