Yesterday I travelled on the EMR 1439 Grimsby - Liecester service. It was formed of 2x 156. At many stations the train was too long so the guard needed to open each door manually increasing the dwell time. In the past such services would be 153+156. I was expecting a 3 car 170 to be honest. do the 156s not have SDO? If the service was formed of 2x 158 (like many were yesterday) would the same problem existed?

most bizarre thing for me was the signaller letting and early running freight ahead of it. Yes the lack of SDO was increasing station dwell time. But that is a pretty heavy needless delay.

something i have noticed a few times on that line.

The freight regulation issue was an error.

EMR 15x don't have SDO fitted and the guard has to operate the doors manually at short platforms. The exception is 158889 which has SDO fitted by South West Trains but it isn't used.

Thanks. I suspect (or hope) next year the 3 car 170s will be used. it was great to have longer trains, but operationally it didn’t look like it was working well for the poor wet guard or the impatient passengers.

The smaller stations are a hindrance, especially Newark Castle which is busy but the Nottingham bound platform is particular short.

A 4 car 15x has far more seats than a 3 car 170 which helps very much for Lincoln and Nottingham.

Be interesting what they do next year on the Skegness route. It looks like the 158s are staying and 2x 158 is better then 2x 170 because of the corridor connections. Shame it isn’t worth keeping the 153s for this kind of work but understand keeping up staff knowledge for low utilisation isnt worth it.

i noticed at Market Rasen the train was over the crossing. Not ideal. Back in the old days the stop board was past the front of the platform. But don’t see a 4/5 car stop board at Market Rasen.

not easy for EMR. 4x 15x are great for big crowds. But i have seen many times on routes with SDO passengers in the wrong part of the carriage missing their stop. (Despite lots of announcements).

Any plans to fit SDO on the 158? although if they use them on peak crowd (such as Skegness- Nottingham) and the Christmas Market the Liverpool route suffers.
