Morning All,

Looking for a bit more information relating to the role of "Semi Skilled Engieer" at Northern

I'm considering applying for the Heaton Depot Vacancy

I don't have any experience with maintain trains, however I am Mechanically/Technically minded due to being an engineer within another field

Any help/advice or insight into the role would be appreciated

Thanks

I haven't seen the vacancy and don't work at Heaton but I am a driver at Newcastle and if it's the same role as I nearly put in for a few years ago I believe it's more of a fitters role than an engineering one (ie more changing oil and filter etc rather than diagnosing faults etc). Heaton is seen as a good place to work I believe and even though this is probably less money than the qualified engineer role it's probably a lot easier ie less stressful. There's probably ample opportunities to progress as well

Morning,

Thanks for getting back to me, and cheers for the info :D

The long term plan is to progress down the driver route however I still have a passion for engineering hence the appeal of this particular role

I've also applied for the Depot Driver Role (Talent Pool) at Heaton so will see how that progresses

Thanks

I'm sure it'd be a good job - MDD is a good job too (although if your long term goal is to be a driver Heaton can be reluctant to release people for courses from what I've heard). Either way both roles are decent and a good foot in the door to the company. Progression is good at Northern!!

Thanks again for the response

Quick question, can you forsee any issues with having multiple applications for the same TOC but different roles?

No I don't think that's an issue - I had two in at the same time when I got the drivers job. One thing I will say once your application is submitted is not to rely on getting invites to interview etc via your personal email. You need to check the online portal you submitted your application through. This is particularly important when it comes to picking a slot for your interview as they may be held over only a couple of days and you need to give yourself a fighting chance of picking a slot that is convenient for you. Good luck
