Just had a mail from TfL stating the escalator at the LO exchange end of SS will be shut from Monday 14th until "Jan 2023".

It is a very annoying detour to the other end of the station especially in Winter and for my girlfriend on her own.

What is the technical reason they need to knock out both at the same time?

Simply a layman’s guess, but sheer speed? Two months of nothing compared to four or five months of limited access as they do things one by one. Both have their pros and cons of course.

Sounds similar to what they did at South Ken Piccadilly line. They closed the station completely and did the escalators in one go rather than separately. It did still seem to take quite a long time though!

It doesn't seem so long ago since the last time these escalators were shut and we were sent on the detour (although it was pre-covid, it just seems like it wasn't that long ago!) - it's just the down escalator that's broken at the moment seemingly (given that the up escalator is currently working) so are they going to be working on the other one as well I wonder.

I agree re the detour though, I did it the other day even though you can walk down the static escalator at the moment because I had a suitcase with me but it does add to the journey time (particularly with the half hourly intervals for Overground off-peak it will make tight connections difficult or impossible).

I know it's a bit annoying but there is Liverpool Street if she doesn't want to do the walk, but obviously that also adds to journey time and may be inconvenient depending on where she is coming from.

She uses the Victoria line to Victoria, we come in from Theobalds Grove so the train to Liv st is slow. On the way home she will probably go via Tottenham and up to Cheshunt and walk home from there

Never did find out the reason for this - but I note this has now reopened according to an email I received from TfL (not back in London yet so haven't been this way in a while).

The escalator has broken down again
It is seeming like a semi-regular occurrence here, even despite the length of works to remedy it.
It was broken Tuesday, although working again Wednesday morning when I went through.
