Just received an email from Northern stating that the Settle & Carlisle line will be closed between Appleby and Carlisle on Monday and Tuesday 29/30 July, due to urgent engineering works. Does anyone know what the problem is? A reoccurrence of the Long Marton - Kirkby Thore mining subsidence problems?

Odd that it can wait a month but is urgent enough to need short notice weekday access. Wonder if there is more to this.

If its an emergency then resources would be there tonight either internal or the framework contractors depending on the issue. The route are obviously happy to mitigate for the initial month it's urgent enough to do midweek rather than the more usual weekend. Just seems odd.

Evening guys
This is a landslip between Carlisle and Armathwaite on the up line and I think it is just south of Eden Brows. I first viewed it a couple weeks ago when traveling south and to me it looks quite serious. So much so I’m surprised the line is still open. There is a 5 mph speed restriction resulting in trains arriving about 5 minutes late at stations down the line. I sure hope it isn’t an “Eden Brows” mark 2 ☹️

Weekends are busier than weekdays for passengers on the S and C, and there isn't much freight north of Kirkby Thore.

Probably to sort the embankment out on the Up line near Howe and Co Sidings that currently has a 5mph Speed Restriction in place due to the embankment being supported by a wall of sand bags with movement detection equipment also fitted. Been like that for about a month. Hopefully they may look at the three 20mph slacks as well between Carlisle and Langwathby whilst they are at it.

Ahha! That, presumably, is why I see so many trains these days losing 4-5 mins so early in the journey on the up on RTT?
