Should topless people be banned from trains?

Yesterday, I saw a topless man on a train. Surely, it is inappropriate for people to be topless on trains - with their sweaty armpits / backs on the seats?

Considering the fact that most train seats will have people's dirty footprints all over them plus all kinds of other dried bodily fluids, I reckon someone's sweaty armpits should be among the least of our worries!

With that logic we should also ban people from wearing shorts too - think of all the sweaty knees. And you never know, the sweat might soften the seats on modern stock :)

Frankly, the railway has bigger problems right now

Fix the air conditioning, then people wouldn't feel the need to go topless.

They're not allowed to go on the buses over here has they have to cover up, the same rule also applies to the shops.

I'm not particularly prude but I don't like seeing men with their tops off, or women wearing barely anything.

If you want to do it in your back garden that's fine but while out and about, keep your clothes on please.

Plus, in my experience the difference between having a t-shirt on or not is marginal. In fact, it may be more healthy from a sunburn point of view...

If I recall correctly, to be topless inside a train contravenes a condition of carriage or a bye-law but I can't remember where it is. This would have existed in BR days.

Nothing to do with it. Some people just like to show off, men in particular in this respect. They believe that other people are admiring them. Have you noticed that some men wear shorts, sandals and Hawaiian T-shirts in the depths of winter too?

Once I was in a queue in a shop in winter, frost outside, and the shop (a farm and garden supplies) was at the sort of temperature you would expect that sort of shop to be, especially with the door to the outside constantly being opened and closed. I was wearing jeans, jersey, anorak, and walking boots. But the guy behind me was in the above type "Hawaiian beach" garb. He was hugging and slapping himself, moaning "They need some better heating in this place!". Idiot.

Indeed, it boosts their confidence particularly when trying to attract any lady that catches their eye from what I've seen. Women too have been doing this recently too, wearing tight, revealing and minimal clothing - too during the winter - which just confuses and annoys me. Just cover up, too much bare skin makes me uncomfortable.

I've said it on here before and i'll say it again, any man wearing sandals should be banished from the earth. When I eventually assume control (muhahaha) it is the first law I will pass.

I personally couldn’t care less if people feel the need to de-shirt.

If it’s hot then fair enough, if it’s cool then they just look like an idiot.

Regarding the men who take off their shirts, most of them are overweight and covered in tattoo's so it's something you would want to show off.

Agreed.
Feet on seats is more of a bother for me. Airline seats help in that respect.

It is fairly grotty and should be covered by good manners if nothing else!

This post confuses me. Bare skin makes you uncomfortable? Without coming over all Sid James i really don't see an issue. People should dress however they want. it isnt up to you or I to try and stop them ( as long as they meet obvious societal minimums)

Not uncomfortable as in it makes my skin crawl but it's just a bit awkward if I can see too much of your body (including outlines) out in public if you understand what I mean hopefully. Indeed we can't do much about it, but no streaking please!

Toplessness is for the beach. Anywhere else (especially on public transport where you are likely to come into close contact with others) is offensive and disrespectful. I'm not too keen on men in shorts either but I think I've lost that battle.

It was a bright cold day in June, and the clocks were striking thirteen.

Oh dear, you must live an unhappy life if something as trivial as a bit of skin offends you. There are far worse things in life to get uptight about. Some people on here are really going over the top, and need to get a grip on things that are a real nuisance, like crap train services for example.

Don't know about standard class but there should be a strict dress code for men travelling in first - no tops off and no shorts. Preferably all should be suited and booted as well. ;) :D

Only a few years ago people would have said that about smoking on trains. Crap train services are made even crappier by anti-social behaviour.

Whether I consider toplessness to be appropriate largely depends on the "fitness" of the individual concerned, I suppose. If it was me that wasn't wearing a shirt on a train, I do believe you'd be quite within your rights to complain, though; some things should probably remain covered! ;)

To go so far as to ban shorts, though - I think that's a step too far.
