Hi
I was thinking of going to Shrewsbury on Saturday to catch Britannia and tornado, but does anyone know how good the platform access is? Do they check tickets or have barriers or can you just go in?

Cheers

Jason

There are barriers at Shrewsbury for the main platforms (4,5,6,7) which, on the occasions I've visited, have often been open. The adjacent platform 3 (which has a separate entrance) is not barriered, and is infrequently used by trains.

When Tornado cisited Swansea a couple of years ago, the barriers were left open so that people who wnated to see the loco had easy access. Obviously, ATW realised that this would be a popular attraction and wouldd raw the crowds, which it did!

As Shrewsbury is also an ATW station, it may be that the barriers will be opened up again.

The main island platform (4-7) is gated in the access subway, although they are sometimes left open.
However, there is separate access to the western platform (3) from the station front, and this might not be gated - only a few trains use it.
A local expert will know.
The ECS will be parked at Coton Hill, on the Chester line, but viewing this is quite difficult unless you take a trip to Gobowen and back while they are there.

Why not just buy a platform ticket to be sure of not falling foul of the gates? That is one of the things they are for after all.

Platform 3 (the ungated one) will give you good views of the specials because they will either use platform 3 or platform 4 which is directly across from P3. The only other platform long enough to accommodate a special is P7, but the specials probably won't use that, because you can't access the Chester line (for Coton Hill sidings) from P7 without a lengthy shunt in the wrong direction.

But dfurn makes a good point - a platform ticket will save any hiccups whether or not the gates are left open!
