Sicily using coupon

Hi, quick question please.

My daughter is planning on travelling by train from Catania to Palermo in Sicily. She has a FIP card and an FS coupon.

Do you know if this requires a reservation or if she can just rock up? I normally plan on long distance needing reservations but regional typically not - and not sure what this counts as. Any advice? Thanks!

Check the timetables on trenitalia.com. Most trains though will be regional trains, for which reservations are not even possible. If you have a FIP coupon, you can simply jump on.

but watch out for the local narrow gauge trains away from the main lines, not FS and not free with FIP. Probably still not very expensive though. Worth trying to buy a priv ticket at the station or on the train all the same...

The only reservations possible on Sicily are on through services between Syracuse/Palermo and the mainland via the ferry from Messina to Villa San Giovanni. They are compulsory.

Owing to electrification works, there is an hour's rail replacement bus between Catania and Dittaino before joining the train onwards to Palermo.

Alternatively, it is possible to make the trip entirely by train (as we did last week) changing at Messina. It takes longer, but both legs of the route follow glorious coastline.

There is no catering on trains on Sicily, but the station cafeterias at Catania and Palermo offer drinks and snacks, and there are several cafe-bars in and around Messina station.
