Passengers on Munich’s S-Bahn can soon look forward to traveling on the most modern S-Bahn trains in Germany. Siemens Mobility will deliver 90 new S-Bahn trains worth more than two billion euros after winning an EU-wide tender.
The contract includes an option for additional trains. Financing for the trains is guaranteed by the State of Bavaria through a leasing model.

The new S-Bahn trains ordered for Munich offer more space, greater comfort, and many innovations. The first trains are scheduled to enter passenger service at the end of 2028. For the first time in Germany, completely integrated S-Bahn trains, that will stretch to over 200 metres. The trains will also have high capacity with 1,841 passengers covered. With the order, the State of Bavaria and the Munich S-Bahn are preparing for expected passenger growth in coming decades and for the planned mobility transition. The trains are highly energy-efficient, require little maintenance, and receive software updates via the cloud.

Evelyn Palla, board member for regional Transport, Deutsche Bahn AG said: “A 200-meter-long S-Bahn means higher capacity, better punctuality, and greater comfort for our passengers. Germany’s most modern S-Bahn trains will be an important component in our efforts to drive the mobility transition in the Munich region. Each of the new XXL trains will replace 1,500 cars during rush hours. This is truly local transport of the future.”Innovations within train also extends to its interior. In the new trains, the interior LED lighting varies depending on the time of day. The trains will also offer free WiFi, and improved mobile phone reception with special windows. A far more powerful air conditioning system operating with environmentally friendly refrigerants.

Michael Peter, chief executive officer of Siemens Mobility commented: “Siemens Mobility is especially proud to be delivering the most innovative S-Bahn trains in Germany. Providing unique digital functions, maximum passenger comfort, environmental protection, and operational safety, this S-Bahn train will set new standards for the mobility transition in Germany.

“In the future, passengers in Munich and the surrounding region will travel in comfortable trains that are exceptionally reliable and future-proof thanks to state-of-the-art Siemens rail technology.”

As with other Siemens Mobility trainsets, the company confirmed the S-Bahn train will be equipped with the European Train Control System as well as a Train Integrity Monitoring System. It will also have Railigent X installed – Siemens Mobility rail asset management platform.

Siemens has built some great trains, I look forward to travel on these in the latter part of this decade or early next decade if I ever travel through Munich.

What are these replacing? Class 423 units?
The 90 Siemens units have been ordered in conjunction with the Zweite Stammstrecke (second trunk route) currently under construction. I'm not aware if any of the 420s or 423s will be replaced, or whether the 90 units includes replacement for accident-damaged 423s.

I've not been to Munich for about 5 years - are they still using 420's on the S-Bahn? There were very limited numbers of them last time I was there.

They were still running around back in October. That was a weekend, too.

I'd imagine that an order of 90 might see off some 420s (or relegate them to Peak use only).

Thanks, having done a little research I see that Munich has some refurbished ex-Stuttgart and Rhine-Ruhr units. The original 420's are around 50 years old.

The 420s currently in use date from around the 1990s so not as old as they may appear.

I read Munich is getting 424s from Hanover to replace the 420s

That'd make sense - especially as the 424s have been relegated from Hannover S-Bahn duties for a while (I believe some are in Cologne and have been done up now, too).
