I am a little confused over tickets on the FGW sleeper. I am looking at Paddinton to Penzance on Friday the 13th of January 2012 with a 16-25 railcard.

I am getting an advance single ticket for £31.35, this has supp written underneath it on the trainline. Does this mean I also need another ticket, or what, I'm confused.

Thanks Karl

I beileve that means supplement and you will pay extra, I dont believe you need another ticket.

I imagine it's a berth supplement as stated above. Give me a few minutes and I'll look into it.

National Rail said:
  • Holders of First Class tickets who purchase a sleeper berth supplement enjoy a single berth cabin to themselves.
  • Holders of Standard class tickets who purchase a sleeper berth supplement travel tickets travel in either a single or twin berth (sharing with someone else of the same sex) cabin on payment of the relevant Standard class supplement.

National Rail said:
The following supplements are payable on top of your train ticket for a Sleeper berth:

  • Standard single berth cabin - £45.00
  • Standard twin berth cabin - £30.00 per berth (bunk style beds, sharing )
Supplements are not valid with Advance tickets.
There are also inclusive tickets which include one-way advance purchase train travel and an overnight berth from £49 per person.

I imagine that means you would need to pay a supplement to get a seat, although I'm not sure.

Whatever you do, don't use thetrainline; they're always more expensive than buying directly from the TOC, or from redspottedhanky.com.

How do I just book seated accommodation on the sleeper? I thought it was going to be simple.

Oh and yes I never use the trainline to book, it just loads up quicker on my phone than East Coast does.

EDIT

When I get to the next page I can tick a box which says "Seated Supplement (free)

This is a seat. No additional charge. This selection will ensure you are reserved a seat. "

Appears that I don't have to pay anything extra.

Supp on the FGW/Trainline website means "This ticket type requires payment of a supplement in addition to the fare shown."

However, a seated supplement is free. This is confirmed on the page after the journey selection, where you enter your name and telephone number.

To book sleeper tickets you will probably have to use www.firstgreatwestern.co.uk , most other sites have problems selling tickets for the sleeper. You need a free supplement because if you bought a walk up ticket you would have a choice of free seat supplement or £45 berth supplement. When you book an advance seated ticket you are simply forced to take the free seat supplement.
