Hi all,

Over the summer I am planning on purchasing a 1st class all line rover to make the most of recieving a child discount for first class fares. I will be 15 during the period of travel. To make the most of the ticket I would like to be able to travel by sleeper train, primarily on the Caledonian. On the national rail website, it is stated that an all line rover is valid in the seated accomadation on both the Riviera sleeper and Caledonian. However, will I be permitted to travel unaccompanied on these services? From previous experience traveliing from Euston on the Highlander they only checked tickets on the platform prior to boarding rather than onboard so would it anything/anyone be stopping me from just boarding at Watford where to my knowledge no ticket check takes place?

Also, should I be permitted to travel, how much are room supplements that allow an upgrade from a seat to a bed?

Thanks in advance for your replies

Caledonian Sleeper's policy appears to be that you can't travel unaccompanied:
Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult on board our services. Children under five travel free, however there is not a separate bed or seat allocated to them. Each adult is permitted to have a maximum of one child under five years of age travelling with them free of charge.

Children under the age of 12 must travel in the same room or connecting rooms with an adult. Children aged 12 – 15 can travel in a room by themselves, however this must be in a room directly next to an accompanying adult. Please ensure you have been allocated adjacent rooms in the reservation process to confirm. If the reservation system does not allocate adjacent rooms, please contact our Guest Service Centre.

We also advise that children under 12 should not sleep in an upper bed whilst travelling on our services.

It is very difficult to know what they would do in practice as leaving an unaccompanied child in London or Watford overnight would be more of a safeguarding issue than them travelling alone on the sleeper. One thing is for certain, they wouldn't be very happy about the situation.

It's an interesting situation as I don't see how it is any different from any other service in seated accommodation, albeit the time which it runs. What seems to contradict this rule however is I believe in the past and maybe still now they ran the fort william to Glasgow/Edinburgh part of the sleeper as a regular passanger service providing a later train for locals. I wonder what their stance would be on that?
