Slovenian Timetables

I'll be popping to Slovenia in a few weeks and hopefully catching a handful of trains whilst I'm there.

Is there anywhere it's possible to get train times in a handy format (such as a pdf).

I can search times and buy tickets easily enough, but can't find timetables anywhere.

If anyone has suggestions on places to go, feel free to suggest, too.

Last time I went I had a quick trip to Ljubljana. I'll be staying in Novo Mesto.

Definitely worth doing is the Transalpina from Jesenice to Nova Gorica and Sezana, but that will be awkward from Novo Mesto - a 6hr (absolute minimum) circular tour from Ljubljana.

Thank you 30907. Excellent suggestion.

If doing some of this in darkness during autumn or winter, is it best from Ljubljana to first travel to Jesenice or alternatively go first to Sezana?

I have worked out Ljubljana 0930 hours EC212, Jesenice 1034x-1119 LP4205, Nova Gorica 1315x-1441 LP4223, Sezana 1547x-1650 LPV2615 and arriving back at Ljubljana at 1845. This will be in October, so the last trip will be in darkness.

My aim is to cover the most scenic sections by day.

Are these loco hauled passenger trains or railcars?

EC212 will be loco-hauled. The rest will be Railcars.

See links to the booked formations:

The least scenic part will be the first leg of that.

There is a loco-hauled working on the Transalpina: the car-carrier Bohinska Bystrica-Podbrdo-Most na Soci, which has a coach for ordinary passengers. Fitting it in would be a challenge!

Thank you 30907. Most helpful.

I have designed a day tour in the opposite direction i.e clockwise from Ljubljana:

Ljubljana depart 0800 LP2674
Sezana 0955x-1010 LP4210
Nova Gorica 1103-1126 (same train)
Jesenice 1330x-1422 LP2417
Ljubljana 1533.

'x' indicates change trains

I hope the morning train operates close to time as otherwise, it's a lengthy wait at Sezana for a train that departs close to 1430 hours.

Is there a way to see live times in Slovenia?

I am planning a similar trip in the winter time so an unexpected wait would not only be lengthy but also freezing.

I suspect the connection would wait, within reason.

And if you fancy a 2-hour lunch break in Most na Soci, you can incorporate the car carrier for a bit of "big diesel" and still be back in daylight :)

Terrific suggestion. It looks like a mixed train of old. Cars can even load up to 10 minutes prior to departure.

This would mean departing from Most na Soci at 1441 hours on AQVT858, changing trains at Bohinjska Bistrica from 1526x to 1606 (railcar LP4296), then at Jesenice (1641x-1735) changing to the compulsory reservation EC213 to arrive Ljubljana at 1833 after a mostly express run.

It won't be daylight in mid October but the loco hauled motorail train is well worth doing.

EC213 has optional reservations. AFAIK, the only compulsory reservations in Slovenia are on night trains, and even then not for the seats.

So can you use this as a "foot passenger" without having to bring a car or bike with you?

Yes, though I haven't done it - it even appears in the DB planner. The single coach is no longer a 4-wheeler, though.

What is the typical punctuality of domestic Slovenian trains?

Close to Swiss-like, or more like Germany?
I have always found Slovenian domestic trains to be very reliable. They have always been right on time when i have used them. Better than the Swiss from my experience. Switzerland is good but not as good as a lot of people think. If i have had quite a few delayed Swiss domestic trains.

Are trains such as compulsory reservation EC213 likely to be quiet, or busy, in a month such as October 2025?
As mentioned by @rvdborgt previously - EC213 isn't compulsory reservation, certainly not in Slovenia anyway (going back a few years I recall these services used to be compulsory reservation if entering Croatia). As it no longer runs through to/from elsewhere and is just a Villach to Zagreb service, its unlikely to be very busy.
