This is going to sound stupid, but whilst we're on the subject, what's the difference between a 'Slug' and a 'Tractor'?

A Tractor is your Basic 37.
And A Slug is A 37/9xx.They are slow to build power.

this has a useful bit of slug history, there are also some sounds here

Regarding noise levels, ony ever ridden behind Ruston powered 905 (on the Dartmoor Railway); this sounded quite different to the normal EE powered 37's but could still be described as being 'beastly'.

spot on with the sound clips.
the slugs were supposed to be the fore runners of the aborted class 38, and, were prototypes with a few having mirlees engines and others had ruston's.

originally the 'slugs' were very quiet as all six were fitted with very effective silencers, however problems arose with i believe cracking of the silencer intake pipe and the silencer casings themselves, that they were all eventually removed and 'straight' stacks were fitted which dramatically changed the noise output to say the least!! and its a toss up as to whether the mirrless(901-904) or the ruston's(905-906) were the noisiests diesels around.

The link given by 'Dennis' above gives some more insight into these interesting prototypes
