I was thinking New Mills, pop. 12,000
Indeed, Tyndrum is the smallest settlement in the UK with more than one railway station.
You beat me to it!Tyndrum?
Tyndrum is the smallest settlement to have more than one railway station but if keeping to the thread title it certainly is not a town. It’s a small village with a population of under 200.Tyndrum?
Although very close they are in different counties, i wouldn't count them as being the same place. If we're being strict on town definitions, then is Woburn Sands a town (and one place together with Apsley Guise)? They certainly look fairly conjoined and like a quite small place to have two station...
Don't tell the residents of Grayshott (Hampshire and Surrey) or Emsworth (Hampshire and West Sussex)....Although very close they are in different counties, i wouldn't count them as being the same place.
Plus Earlswood (WM and Warks) but so what? Those are the same place. Woburn Sands and Aspley Guise are not.Don't tell the residents of Grayshott (Hampshire and Surrey) or Emsworth (Hampshire and West Sussex)....
The village has expanded with new housing around the Saltings and up in the Church Road area since the mid nineties. And the Saltings station has only two services a day now the St Erth Park and Ride is in full swing.Could Lelant be the smallest in England? (At least among those with the place name at the beginning of both station names.)
Absolutely; and some of my 1980s school classmates were bussed in from Woburn Sands and Aspley Guise.Plus Earlswood (WM and Warks) but so what? Those are the same place. Woburn Sands and Aspley Guise are not.
Ryde's population (24k, 2021) far exceeds that of Androssan - post #10What would be the smallest settlement with three stations? Possibly Ryde on the Island Line?
Dorking? What would be the smallest settlement with three stations? Possibly Ryde on the Island Line?
Ardrossan has a slightly smaller population.Dorking?
Hawarden Bridge is not in Hawarden though!Hawarden, although not a winner, is in there with two (named) stations for a population of c13500.
It also has an airport.
Pontefract also notable for having three stations for a population of 30000.
Good grief! It must also be contender for the "most over-optimistic promoter during the Nineteenth Century Railway Mania"...... Fairbourne as having eight stations with a population just over 1000
That's counting the narrow-gauge railway, as technically not ruled out by the question.Good grief! It must also be contender for the "most over-optimistic promoter during the Nineteenth Century Railway Mania"...
To add to that, I then suggest Blackpool, Population of 141k, and about 30 stations (depending on what counts as a "station" in the Pleasure Beach). That's counting the narrow-gauge railway, as technically not ruled out by the question.
