Hi
I need to travel from Berlin to Copenhagen on October and was looking at the Snalltaget night train, booking a private cabin. I have seen some terrible reviews on Trustpilot though, but wondered if anyone among the more informed audience we benefit from here had experiences? I sometimes think the general public can have unrealistic expectations of night trains.
Thanks!

Hi, we intended to take the Snalltaget from Hamburg to Stockholm (originating in Berlin) but sadly there were issues with the OHLE and Danish network that prevented us from leaving Hamburg. We did stay on for a couple of hours whilst making alternative plans (the onboard team allowed people to sleep on the train overnight despite it not leaving Hamburg). However, the room itself was decent enough, quite cramped compared with other sleeper compartments I have been on but serviceable and comfortable. There is no air conditioning which was a problem, we went during peak summer and the temperature in the cabin was pushing 30 degrees C. It would have been fine had we been moving though, we could have opened the window to get some air flow.

I would keep expectations on the basic end, sadly I didn't try out any food or drink offerings because of the delay but I would say you are spot on with saying that often people have unrealistic expectations! My overall impressions are that it is perfectly fine for a sleeper service and the private cabin/toilets and corridors were clean and to a good standard.

Did Hamburg-Malmö with them last year. It's obviously old stock with a fairly basic refurb but I don't recall any major problems.

I think that the coaches that they use are Bvcmz from the 1960s or early 1970s that were previously used by DB for City Night Line services. They may also be using one or more Bvcmbz. So, yes, couchettes.

I did Berlin-Malmo 2 years ago in a couchette. It was possibly the best night's sleep I've ever had! Unless things have changed, you'll need to make your own bed, including putting the duvet in its cover: this is somewhat entertaining when you have 6 people in the compartment...

I did the return journey (from "Copenhagen Parkway") the following night, this time in a seat. Was not a good night, for a number of reasons. The seats were rather uncomfortable; most other sleepers I've done in a seat have ben much better (if not luxurious!)

I just came back from the Stockholm to Hamburg service last week. Yes, I also read a bunch of terrible Trustpilot reviews. A lot of them seem to be around aftercare following cancellations, or missed connections (which I don't have too much sympathy for with a night train).

My experience was actually above expectations. The couchette was fine, actually more comfortable than the Nightjet I took last year. Unlike the Nightjet, it had working aircon and rather comfortable pillows! The staff were all very friendly and helpful.

Highlight was a meal in the Krogen restaurant as the sun was setting over Sweden.

Yea, I’ve travelled in a private cabin both ways and it was perfectly fine. The couchettes are old but in good condition and have USB-A chargers below the window. There’s no air conditioning but opening windows, so travelling alone in your own compartment in October should be fine.
