Evening All,

Transnet are selling a large quantity of steam locos, preferably for preservation. However, if no suitable offers are received, they will go for scrap.

This is the Press Release from FEDRAIL :

http://www.railforums.co.uk/attachment.php?attachmentid=25197&stc=1&d=1452553288

and this is the list of locomotives available :

http://www.railforums.co.uk/attachment.php?attachmentid=25198&stc=1&d=1452553461

One of the locos on the list is 15A Class 4-8-2 1970 'Milly' which was once the shed pilot at De Aar; she was the shed master's favourite and kept in immaculate condition :

This looks like being the last opportunity to save at least some of what still remains in South Africa.

How much of it is in decent condition, and perhaps easy enough to restore?

Sadly many of them are badly vandalised; despite supposedly being in secure compounds, scrap merchants have been able to gain access without challenge and chop bits off willy-nilly.

However, some are better than others and could be restoration projects while others could still provide some vital spare parts for the restoration of other locos.

The preservationists in South Africa have had a pretty rough time of late, but there is now the opportunity to try and salvage at least something. By spreading the word around the world via the internet, word of mouth, railway publications, etc., there is the chance that somebody, or even several somebodies, can do something to assist.

More details can be obtained via the e-mail address in the press release.

I'd love to import some of the British built stuff and set up a 3'6" gauge preservation line. The idea being to show how our railways influenced the rest of the world.

One can dream.

You (or I) should have won that 66 million that was up for grabs on the lottery a couple of weeks ago!

That train pictured looks like the one from movie Doomsday which I saw lastnight. Is it?

I'd not heard of that film so I googled it and read that it was largely filmed in South Africa. So although it probably wasn't the 15A 'Milly' in my picture, it could well have been one the preserved SAR locos.

I hope they didn't crash it or do anything else untoward to it.
