Why did SWT increase the number of 73s on their books threefold during 2005? As far as I'm aware 73s cannot couple to Desiros so they would've been no good as rescue locos for the new fleet. Were they to facilitate the run down of the slam-door fleet? i.e. as extra rescue locos for the slammers during the period when they were running side by side with Desiros

Back in 2005, SWT also had the fleet of Class 442s, which were able to be hauled if necessary (as all trains should be able to be, but that's another topic...). One 73 used to be outbased as a Thunderbird at Woking, and I'm pretty sure another was used as Bournemouth depot pilot.
