Sorry this is probably a silly question but yesterday I noticed, from a Birmingham - Liverpool emu, a blue 08 shunter moving an emu in the new South Western livery into or out of the new long Alstom shed at Ditton, where they repainted the AM90 Pendolinos. Would I be right in guessing that South Western units are going there to have the new South Western livery applied (whether it's paint or vinyls)? And what class of unit might it have been?

Some of the new Class 701 'Arterio' (Bombardier Aventra) units are going there for modifications, so I'd expect it was one of those.

The 701s are being modified there, as has already been posted, but it’s definitely nothing to do with painting or livery as they came from Bombardier in the new colours from new,
