I know this is only used for excursions but why not have a platform number? When did it last have a number? Do other stations on the network have unnumbered platforms?

Keith has an unnumbered platform referred to as the “Branch platform”. Though it’s very, very rarely used these days.

Isn’t it actually on a goods line? In which case it can’t get used by a standard pax train

If I remember rightly once the Derby resignalling work is complete the temporary platform 7 will lose it's platform number.

Hooton has an unnumbered excursion platform by the entrance (except in the lift where it says "Platform 0").

I seem to remember Preston having an unnumbered former mail platform which has been used for specials to the Open when played at Royal Lytham (more precisely to Ansdell & Fairhaven station).

Crewe & Chester also have spare platforms which are accessible but never used. These would presumably be numbered 13 and 0 respectively.

Yes, it would be platform 7 but is unused.

No 7 is on th3 short wait car park side. The one used very occasionally is the fomer RES platform opposite existing Platform 1 where North Union House is located along with a short bay on the opposite face at the North End where the old Red Star Office was. The south end has 3 sidings of which 1 has a platform face.

Whereabouts is this please? Tried to see it using Google Maps satellite view to no avail.
I believe Highlandspring was referring to this: https://goo.gl/maps/BtGyahqj9wo. The unnumbered platform is the one that curves east-south (towards Keith Town/Dufftown). Interestingly, Keith Town is shown as a 'national rail' station. Last time I was in the area (a couple of years ago), there was no track between the two stations!

Correct; these pictures taken in December 2017 show the buffers at the severed connection. The extant signage sits alongside the trackless missing link.

There used to be one at Bangor, Gwynedd - the second face of the down island platform. I did see it pressed into service for locals to Holyhead during times of disruption occasionally in the 1970s.
