Does anyone know when exactly Southern stopped operating the 319s? It is very hard to find an exact date online. It was some point in either 2009 or 2010 or 2011 i think. I remember in their later days they used to have a booked working on a peak hour Guildford service. I used to see them on that almost every day in the late 2000s. You would also occasionally see then on Dorking services and on Horsham via Dorking services. Does anyone know a more exact month and year (or even better the final day of them on Southern services) when the last 319s transferred to FCC?

There's a picture on flickr captioned 'The final Southern 319 service arriving at Clapham' and annotated 'Uploaded on March 20, 2009 Taken on March 20, 2009'

Also, Colin Rosenstiel has a set of pics of 319s (one in Southern livery) that seem to have been taken the previous day headed 'A last trip to Moorgate Thameslink' so more than one thing was coming to an end around then

The 21-22 March 2009 weekend was a key date in the Thameslink programme.

Farringdon-Moorgate closed, and so did the old bay platforms at Blackfriars. Thameslink took over lots of ex South Eastern services that had used the Blackfriars bays, mainly to Sevenoaks but also peak hour trains to/from Orpington, Gillingham and Maidstone. There was a lot of clever linking up so that paths into Moorgate went through City Thameslink to take paths out of Blackfriars, and vice versa.

But that needed more class 319s. I guess that Southern must have got some EMUs from South Eastern to balance everything up, but I can't remember the details of that.

Thank you for sharing that. That makes sense because i think early 2009 was the last time i saw one on the Guildford branch. I had presumed they were still around for a bit longer but it seems that must have been the end.

I remember Southern had three 375/9s (905/921/924) on hire for a couple of months in 2009. They worked a regular diagram as a fixed twelve car that did mostly London to Brighton workings plus peak hour London to Bognor Regis and London to Littlehampton services. I wonder if that was related to the last 319s going.

Southern temporarily lost some of the 377/2 fleet to Thameslink in early 2009 for the improved Thameslink timetable (Key Output 0). This was due to delays in delivery of the 377/5 for Thameslink.
This was also when the London Midland Class 350’s appeared on the East Croydon to MK route.

The 377/2 eventually returned and the 350s were sent back, but I don’t think anything actually replaced the 319s.

When were they painted into the current Southern Rail green livery? I notice from images that some were still in the Connex yellow/white colours into 2005.
