It looks like the rest of the network won’t suffer too much, except for East Grinsteads not running 10 coaches to free up the 377/3s

Yeh i think barring a couple of peak time trains, grinstead could be 6 car off peak. Certainly dont need to be 10 or 12 off peak and weekends

Also cutting back the 1GXXs to Eastbourne saves some a couple of 4 car units to be used elsewhere

As per the 455 withdrawal, it is now fairly obvious there will be a repeat of service cuts and/or formation changes, in order to release more 377s for coastway services when the 313 retirement comes around in May. What services could potentially have their formations shortened or services truncated? I have pulled some suggestions from another thread:

Would Portsmouth & Southsea/Southampton Central and Bognor Regis splitters/attachers be perhaps reduced to 8 coaches throughout the day, to save a couple 4 coach units? Could those 4 coach units be then substituted for 3 coach 377/3s on metro services, which then allows them to work on the Coastway?

What other services/formations could be reduced?

Southampton and Portsmouth splitters are already 8 coaches outside the peaks.

Not much cuts would be needed. What’s most likely is that all the 313 diagrams are replaced by the 377/3s which Southern have “surplus” of right now. When all the 377/3s transfer routes it shouldn’t have a massive effect on the network. The only change necessary is to get rid of the 4+3+3 formations on the East Grinstead route as previously stated.

So the 377/3's are going back to their original routes?

Assume you mean to drop East Grinstead from 10 to 8 car (i.e. 4+4) to release the 3's for the 313 duties - question is where are the extra 4's doming from - tightening up of duties again? Such as Peak 12 car services reduced to 8 car perhaps?

Can Littlehampton peak services lose a 4 coach unit off the end, reducing it to 8 coaches? I have no idea how busy these services get, so I feel a little bad proposing dragging off a unit when the capacity may well be needed.

With the 313s being gone soon and the 455s having left not long ago i reckon the number of twelve coach trains will be further reduced. I am not sure how many will still run but i can definitely see less twelve coach formations running and more peak hour overcrowding. Southern really need all of the 377/5s from Southeastern soon.

Looking at the timetable it's clear the 377/5s won't be coming from May and at this point even December would be dire. I believe there are no 12 car trains running off-peaks except maybe for the East Grinstead trains.

Was 4 car on electrification in the 80s but admittedly that was with a half-hourly service. Hard to know whether off-peak usage is higher or lower than in 1987, as there seem to be so many conflicting reports about this.
