Hi all

I have DMI coming up for shunter driver. I just wanted some info on what I should be trying to look up about the company as a shunter driver. Most info on here is tailored for trainee drivers.

I know the dmi is a little less formal and with 2 line managers but are they still going to go with the format of mmi of

tell me a time you......etc

Thanks in advance

It'll almost definitely be competency bases, yes (tell me a time when...). I went for a DMI for Depot Driver a few years ago for SWT and they threw in a few curve balls, one of which asked me about 'trailing points' which I had no idea about, and one about depot speed limits (which I knew a bit about). It should be tailored to somebody without railway experience so I'll doubt you'll have anything like that to be honest. I recommend doing research in to the company and the role of a shunt driver so you're forearmed at least.

That bit stumps me as daft as it might seem. I know shunting would be splitting up and forming up trains, making sure everything's a-ok in the process but I can't describe it much better than that (I.e., in an interview situation)

Could anyone describe it better and tell what ''day in the life of a shunter" looks like? (I have an assessment coming up in a month or so and hopefully I can pass that for the next stage)

Thanks. I will litter my sentences with those terms!

Do you have the job advert saved any where?? I always save them incase I get an interview best thing to do is read it carefully and all your answers are in there with what they expect from the job and what they expect you to be like. Even for tell me when questions you can say things I achieved this bye doing what ever with what skills they ask of you

I do now... That's massively helpful. I just need to get the day off for the assessment. And erm pass it!

Anyone had one yet for shunter driver? If mine is only three hours for example, I won't have to take a day off for it

I’m not in this job, but I’d imagine it’s a depot driver role rather than just a shunter, hence the job title. In which case the job will (usually) involve moving trains around the depot (driving them) as well as attaching and splitting units. Also minor repairs such as lightbulbs and wiper blades. Pulling points manually will likely be involved too.

I saw when booking mine they had slots at 9am,10,11 and 1pm if that helps gauge it

I got an answer direct from the company and it can be up to all day if every stage has passed. Time to find a bus driver that wants to swap!
