Just wondering what the maximum design speed is that a guided busway could be built to, and the highest speed that legislation would allow.

I’ve heard that guided busways can theoretically be built to allow operating speeds of 90-100 mph, but they use ordinary road signs to legislate speed limits, and there isn’t currently any signage to denote maximum speeds above 70mph. I guess the NSL sign could be used, but do guided busways have a default maximum speed limit like all-purpose roads and motorways, or are they derestricted (no speed limit) like non-motorway special roads? Would say for example a special 90mph sign have to be made if a purpose-built guided busway did have that as its maximum speed limit?

Since PSVs are limited to 62mph in all other circumstances, it seems unlikely that the design speed of a guided busway would need to accommodate anything higher. However, not all guideways are public highways (if indeed any are), so other rules could apply. But as there are no examples of PSVs operating solely on guideways (and I doubt that there will ever be circumstances where they would) then standard vehicles limited to 62mph would seem to dictate the design speed.

I enjoy bus travel but I’m not sure I’d fancy being on a bus going 90mph
