And Friargate was convenient for that side of the city. There was a Derby Nottingham Road station many years ago.
There has been an update on Waterbeach while this discussion has been in hibernation. The article below explains how the relocation is feasible. Then how come Waterbeach, Cambs, with a population of about 6000, was found feasible to resite? AFAIK it was due to new housing schemes in the other end of the town, but then would it be possible to build some new homes in the coastal/town centre part of Stranraer? More than an hour to the nearest form of civilisation (Ayr 1h 30 away, Glasgow almost 3h) is highly deterring though.
The relocation of Waterbeach railway station should be complete by 2027 - two years later than originally planned.
The Greater Cambridge Partnership has agreed to move forward with the project after additional funding was approved by Cambridgeshire County Council last week.
The developer of a new town north of Waterbeach was originally supposed to lead work on the relocation, as part of the agreement to build more than 11,000 homes.
However, in 2022, the GCP agreed to take on the project after the developer failed to get a commercial funding agreement for the scheme.
Last week, the county council agreed a 'repayable grant' from Homes England to make sure the station work can get under way.
The station is to be moved a mile and a half (2.4m) north alongside the track toward the new development.
Homes England will pay £23m to fund part of the move, which will be repaid by developers in the future.
A further £20m has been pledged by the GCP, which has been overseeing the project.
The relocation of the station is important to the developer as the second phase of 4,500 homes cannot go ahead until it is built.
Portsmouth would do better with a Fratton North/Copnor Road station between Fratton and Hilsea. Wouldn't mess up other services really as the island is it's own branch. If money's absolutely no object, moving Apsley, Hemel Hempstead and Milton Keynes Central and Bristol Temple Meads by ~½ mile each would make them more convenient for the city / town centres.
In two of those cases there isn't currently a railway closer to the city centre that can be used (and I'm not counting the Bristol Harbour railway). A station where the WCML passes under Two Waters Road in Hemel Hempstead now would only be around five minutes closer to the town centre by foot than the existing Boxmoor station, and would probably be too close to either Boxmoor or Apsley (¾ of a mile from each) to keep all three.
I'm less familiar with Portsmouth; would resiting Fratton be of any use? Moving it half a mile north to St. Mary's Road would put it closer to St. Mary's Community Health Campus and not much further away from Eastney, as well as moving it closer to the part of Portsmouth which doesn't look particularly well-served by Fratton or Hilsea.

Waterbeach railway station relocation delayed to 2027
The train station is being moved further along the track as part of plans to build 11,000 new homes.www.bbc.co.uk
Proposals to relocate a train station to accommodate the building of a new town have moved a step closer.
A full business case for Waterbeach station has been recommended for approval by the Greater Cambridge Partnership (GCP).
The station is to be moved a mile and a half (2.4km) north along the track towards the Waterbeach new town development.
The plans will now go to the executive board, which is due to meet next month.
Good to hear. Thanks for sharing as I missed this.A further update on Waterbeach, with a decision hopefully on 10 July.

Station relocation for Waterbeach new town moves step closer
Phase Two of Waterbeach new town cannot go ahead until the station is relocated and up and running.www.bbc.co.uk
Rather than moving any stations on the Exmouth line, an additional one between Polsloe Bridge and Digby and Sowton might be a better solution.Digby & Sowton is one I think should be re-sited further north. It's located towards the southern end of Sowton Industrial Estate, meaning the northern parts are far from any station, and a number of housing estates are also north of the station. If it was moved to somewhere close to Honiton road, there are a couple of fields that could be used for it, and/or utilising the car park of the Police & Crime Commissioner offices. This would be more central, with the housing estates to the west closer, and the centre of the Industrial estate being an easier walk to the station. There also appear to be some new houses being built around the Met Office HQ, which itself is equidistant from D&S and Pinhoe stations at a 25-30 minute walk either way.
In addition, if D&S being further north does cause some customers to lose out, maybe Newcourt could move slightly further north as well, which itself is located at one extreme end of the town/village, but could gain some passengers that would lose out from a re-siting of the former station.

The existing station is on the south-eastern edge of the village, basically there is nothing on the up side of the line. For many Waterbeach travellers moving the station won't make a lot of difference, apart from having to remember to turn right instead of left (or vice versa) when they leave the house. It must be frustrating dor those who walk to the existing station. Hopefully a safe cycle route is provided from the site of the present station to the new one. I wonder why they aren't keeping the old station open?
