Once ETCS is rolled out across the country, will steam trains still be allowed on Network Rail metals?

Only if the fabled portable system comes about and I have no doubt there will be argument about who pays for it.

And the Rivet counters will probably complain about a screen in the cab :)

As ECTS becomes more common across Europe the cost and size of the kit will drop.

A steampunk-inspired device with wood and brass might fit in nicely.

it would be a shame if ETCS made using steam and older heritage diesels on the mainline impractical, but at the end of the day they are essentially toys. Operational requirements are far more important.

Remember what sort of a fuss many people would make if they were withdrawn, and I think that they do enhance the image of the railways, so we really should make something work to accommodate them.

I wonder when it is fully up and running if someone will be able to develop a way of reading the data (not just NWR) like they do with ADS-B on planes.

Can you imagine being able to read what is where from a laptop or smartphone at the end on Donny platform ????

You won't - it'll be a secure data link for ETCS. All trains will be under the control of the signalling centre so no need to broadcast instructions in the clear.

ADS-B is in the clear because light aircraft and others need to receive it for collision avoidance. (As not all aircraft in the sky will be on the same frequency and light aircraft may not even be under ATC Control) However some (Military and Corporate Jets) are lobbying for ADS-B to be encrypted to stop sites like Flightradar24. I should add that technically operating a FR24 base station is ILLEGAL in the UK, as it is illegal to listen to broadcasts where you are not the intended recipient. LiveATC had to removed their feeds from the UK for this reason

That is possible now with the open data feeds which will presumably continue to exist whatever happens with the signaling.

A nice chap from the NR traction and rolling stock team showed me a load of photos from tests they where doing on the Cambrian with this. This was over two years ago, I'll have to make enquires if anyhtings progressed!

Also my understanding was network rail where paying generous compensation for west coast trains whilst they couldn't run charters down the Cambrian.

if steam and diesel operators and owners want their locos to go mainline then they will have to bear the costs of installation/hiring of the equipment...simple

as for the rivet counters who say a screen will be wrong..who cares what they think ? is it their loco ? NO

If steam had stayed after 1967 and came to a natural and not a forced end...then these systems could well have been installed anyway...
