Hi everyone,

We are a group of students from Northumbria University who are carrying out research on the public’s interest on museums and more specifically railway museums. This research is carried out on the behalf of Stephenson Railway Museum, a railway museum and heritage railway based in North Shields in the North East of England.
The Museum is home to:

  • The early locomotive 'Billy' - built in Newcastle around 1826 and used for hauling coal
  • Steam and diesel locomotives used on Tyneside and elsewhere from as early as the 1880s
  • An electrically-powered parcels van of 1904 from the pioneering Tyneside suburban electric railway system
  • An electric locomotive - built in 1909 for use on a colliery line
  • A fleet of passenger coaches from the 1950s.

Our research here aims to help to increase the interest towards the museum. In order to do this, we need some responses to the following survey. Thank you in advance for your support, your help is much appreciated.

Just a little tip for any other surveys you do - it's useful to put appoximately how long the survey will take on the first page. This'll lead to less people half-completing due to being distracted by other tasks if the survey takes longer than they anticipated.

I have completed the survey, but thought that there was no simple answer to some of the questions. I would expect large museums to have a wider range of attractions than a small, but worthwhile local museum. Also, the desire to revisit a museum depends on whether or not your previous visit was good, bad or indifferent.
