On Thursday at Sunningdale I was leaning on the level crossing gates expecting the 2138 arrival from Waterloo. It came around the corner, seemingly on time, and then stopped in the distance. The light on the country end of the station was green, and the level crossing seemed shut normally. The road traffic sat patiently while nothing happened until the 2141 train towards Waterloo came into the station. Then the train from Waterloo started moving at about 1mph and pulled into the station. As it went through the level crossing the driver beeped the horn exactly as it passed me. After both trains had done the level crossing the gates opened. At some point I noticed a young man with a young woman by one of the gate pivots leaning over it as if he was interfering with something.
What exactly happened? In particular, I'd like to be reassured that me leaning on the gate hadn't triggered some interlock and set the signal to red. And can anyone shed light on what the young man might have been doing, or is it unwise to share that information... I have no reason to think he was railway staff.
