It seems like Vivarail has been sending their surplus D78 coaches for scrap.

Could this be the end of the Vivarail D Train programme? potentially to make space for the incoming Renatus Class 321s.

This is not my photo (credits go to Steve Riley) photos of these D78s are very scarce at the moment.

Here D78 Stock DM 7534 sits at Wards waiting for the chop. An unfortunate end but that is the life cycle of rolling stock.

Didn't they purchase 150 vehicles at the time? I presume even intelligent asset management would have seen a few scrapped by now (think Mk.IV disposals). The question I suppose is how many of these have been disposed of like this?

The D78 coaches were reportedly purchased for scrap value anyway. So the only cost to Vivarail has been for transport and storage.

There have been LU coaches in the layby at junction 24 of the M1 quite regularly recently.

Is anyone aware when the 230 trial runs on the Greenford Branch will commence? this does look like Vivarail's last potential D-Train project customer

Suggestions elsewhere are that there is a trial period of running (empty) at Bletchley first as the charging equipment has been installed there.

A landmark for fast charging battery trains this week.
Commissioning of the system at Bletchley TMD.
That would appear to suggest that the Greenford trial is still some time off.

I don't believe it is related as Seaham was their product support division, probably moving somewhere else

As above - Vivarail didn’t store any coaches at Seaham.

Are they retaining any body shells in case of fire or accident damage to one of the existing sets? This would seem to be a prudent measure, but it might fall foul of the usual problem of who pays for something that might not be required.

It’s not known how many vehicles will be disposed.

Not sure of the numbers, but there was 2 x D Stock cars on low loaders presumably heading for scrap parked up in the layby on the M42 J10 island in Tamworth at 0100 this morning.

Brilliant!

What about 230011 - the one that went to the USA?

230 002 is the one that went to the USA...
A second unit, described as 230011 also went.
UK train manufacturer sends second set of Class 230 battery stock to the US

April 26, 2022

Vivarail battery-powered train is a first for the Americas.

Vivarail has sent a second set of battery train stock across the Atlantic, as the US looks set to break new ground with the “Pop-Up Metro” concept.

Two cars were shipped to Baltimore on 9 April and will join their sisters in Rockhill Furnace, Pennsylvania, later this month for testing and demonstrations.

The intention is to lease the trains for use in underutilised lines across the US to pursue “Pop-Up Metro” routes, offering lower cost, lower risk, faster starts of rail-based transit services in the Americas.

Henry Posner III, Chairman of Vivarail shareholder Railroad Development Corporation said: “There’s a lot of excitement about the possibilities that our Pop-Up Metro proposition brings to the Americas.

“With two trains we are now positioned to act on multiple opportunities at the same time. This is critical in positioning Pop-Up Metro as an alternative for the industry at a time when both rail access and decarbonisation have become national priorities. It also helps that the trains are stylish and comfortable.”

Steve McBride, Managing Director of Vivarail said: “We’re incredibly proud that the technology we created in the UK is leading the way for battery-powered train operations in the Americas.

“This opens up a new market for Vivarail’s technology and shows that battery-power is a viable and efficient solution to decarbonise the railway.”

Right... I'd missed that! A quick look round online and I can't see any reference to what went into 230 011 I'm afraid.
