Hi
Does anyone know if there are any 'old' style trains (with windows that you can open) that go from Sutton to Dorking around mid-morning time and returning in the evening? My partner won't get on a new train as he feels claustrophobic.
Much appreciated if you can help.
Thanks
Clare:)

PTSO or platform depending on the weather
These will be squarer trains with ugly fronts without a front-end corridor connection if your partner doesn't know his rolling stock. And the number on the front will start with "58" instead of "377"

Thank you. Do you know what time the 455s are used?

I'm sure someone more knowledgeable can tell you specific services but be warned that stock can be changed around at any time at short notice - therefore the stock may not be the "booked stock"

Clarel, if it's of any help to your partner, the newer Class 377 trains used by Southern on the Dorking route do have hopper windows which can be manually opened by staff in the event of an incident such as air conditioning failure or power supply issues. Actions to be taken are within Southern's standard Hot Weather Policy & Procedure, which is now part of compulsory practical training for all conductors (they may be onboard the trains on this line even if they are not dispatching them from each station, as Horsham-Dorking trains require conductors South of Dorking and very often carry them further North) and knowledge of which is required to be understood by drivers.

(The reason you cannot open them as a passenger is that this might play havoc with the air conditioning, and may also void component warranties as a result.)

This may be pedantic, but Southern 455 stock will be numbered "455 xyz", for clarity.

Yes, but they won't open the 377 hopper windows just because a passenger feels claustrophobic.

If its of any help the SWT from epsom to Dorking are likely to be 455's with hopper windows. So a change an epsom may help your cause. I haven't been that way for a while so I can't really say for certain. If you do that don't get a southern only ticket.

At the moment there is a Desiro diagram running to Dorking covering 455s, it tends to be the same trains. There aren't many runs but the 1124 off Waterloo is one of them. In the main though it's 455s and 456s

Probably doesn't helpyou much, but the following occurs to me:

The SWT 450 desiro seem to me to be much more roomy than a Class 377.

In both class 377, 450 and 444 the space near the wheelchair accessible area will probably feel the roomiest with a large space. These will be in the center of the train; marked on the outside with a wheelchair.

On an SWT class 455 the wide wheelchair accessible space are in the end coaches of the unit

( I cant for the life of me recall the 'roomiest' area in a southern 455 ).
