Hi, I've got a medical on Tues 19th for commercial guard starting on May 23rd. I also have an ultrascan Wednesday 13th to check for gal stones. If I have them I might have to have my gal bladder removed. I can't see that I'll have the operation any time soon as I'm not in any discomfort I have medication but have not had to use it as yet and it's not exactly a priority so think I would have finished training by the time I have it. It's one day key hole surgery only and recovery of about a week. So I would try to work in when on leave. I may not have the results by the time of the medical so should I inform occ health. Any advice would be appreciated.

This doesn’t sound like it’s going to affect you starting the job or your ability to do it for a good while yet. If I were you I’d just keep it to yourself until you know for sure if/when you need any surgery. However, they may ask if you’ve been prescribed any medication from your GP which you would have to disclose, although you aren’t yet taking it. I don’t think that kind of medication would be an issue though. It’s mostly just the ones that contain sedatives that cause problems for them.

Before you go in for the medical they will ask you to fill out a questionnaire regarding medical history. Just put what you have said on the questionnaire to be safe.

Probably worth telling them as you've told us, the date and where you are going to be working!

This is probably a question best asked to the practitioner undertaking the medical.

I had a medical before doing my PTS and other courses in august last year for work on the overhead lines

They will tell you there and then if you have passed everything to the required standard apart from the results of the drug test, which you should know if you’ll pass or not. Alcohol is a there and then breathalyser and everything else such as hearing, eyesight and blood pressure is all there and then
