Hi all,

I have recently attended and been successful in both the assessment day and interview for a Metro Guard role for SWR out of Woking.

I received the call from recruitment around a month ago informing me that I was successful in the interview however they did not have a start date as of yet and that they would be back in touch.

Does anyone have any sort of idea how long I may be waiting? Or what the current situation at the Woking depot is for Metro Guards?

Thanks in advance,
Ben

Congratulations. If it’s been a month it wouldn’t be unreasonable to send a courtesy email to ask if there’s any update. They’re most in the know.

Hi Ben and Congratulations.

It depends on the needs at Woking depot and the queue for that depot. Where you are in that queue depends on when you applied.

You'll get the call about 1 and a half to 2 months before your start date so your medical can be arranged. After passing, getting your references and criminal checks in order and giving notice.

Hope you hear something soon mate

I was interviewed in April.

Got called about three weeks later to say I'd been successful but no vacancies (Wimbledon)

Then got called last week with a start date (training) for early October.

Excellent news Ben. Congratulations.

I wish I could be more helpful, but as with many things on the railway, it's difficult to give an estimate of "when". Some of the folks who have recently joined the company had been going through the process for 2 years or longer before they finally got a start date; others applied earlier just this year and are or soon will already be out working trains by themselves as fully competent guards. Courses are being run on what is seemingly a monthly basis and I heard the other day that two extra courses have had to be put in this year to keep up with the demand for new guards.

To the best of my knowledge, a number of factors are taken into consideration when offering positions on the courses with two of the biggest being which depots have the greatest demand to cover work and the date that you first applied. Potentially, there are others also. I'd second the suggestion to give them a shout. No harm in checking in every now and again.

Based on what I have heard though, if you are yet to hear anything back, you may well be looking at sometime next year.

Adding to Elorith’s comment, if you keep in touch monthly (unless they give you a definitive it’ll be next year) you remain in their thoughts and it MIGHT JUST get you on a course earlier than otherwise. Just don’t overly pester them.
