I have updated my gallery of photographs of the Tamar Valley Line which comprises the Plymouth to Bere Alston section of the former Southern Railway / LSWR / PDSWJR route to London Waterloo and the Bere Alston to Gunnislake section of the Callington Branch.
This is a fascinating line which has survived against all the odds. Should plans come into fruition trains could be running between Bere Alston and Tavistock within the next decade and who knows perhaps even Tavistock to Meldon may be reconstructed to provide a diversionary route to the former GWR coast line at Dawlish.
When I visited last week, it was pleasing to note that the former waiting room and shelter on the currently out of use island platform at Bere Alston has been refurbished and a new roof fitted. Indicative of a new life when trains return to the Tavistock section when once again the island platform will be a necessity?
