Technical question about lights on rear of train

Hello, Not sure if this is the right thread... An single engineering unit has just passed through Manchester Victoria platform 3 showing three white lights to the rear (no red) - is this a slip up or is it allowed on a train like this?

Probably just a slip up by the driver.
