I know, I'm starting another one before ending the Brussels one. Logic is now that if I get another started, I might have the motivation to finish it sooner. Not sure how that works right now, but I'm just desperate to catch up with all the 2013 trip reports now. Any I've not done from 2012 can bugger off as far as I'm concerned. So let's at least start this one tonight, maybe I'll then get everything caught up with by the end of March (if I don't go on a bash on Monday)!

18th February 2013 - Tyne and Wear Metro Bash, Day 1

FINALLY! After 3 weeks of serious graft at work [that's no exaggeration at all either! - Ed], with only two days off in that time and some ridiculous amount of hours worked, I'm on my first trip away for nearly a month! Been a strange week, Friday in particular was both bad and excellent at the same time. No way am I discussing why on here, PM or not. Yesterday I lost all motivation to bother with work at all and a serious whinge was finally had. Anyway, that's all in the past now and it's into Holiday Mode! After getting the best sleep in days, it was time to carry out the usual morning routines before getting the bus into town. After picking up my ticket, pre-booked to collect loyalty points on RedSpottedHanky.com, it's time for a coffee before getting on my first train for 25 days! So nice to be chilling and doing something I enjoy, rather than rushing around like a lunatic for those who don't appreciate it! Yes, that was a work moan and I promise that's the last of it now, you might have noticed it wasn't a good first couple of months at work...175004 is my first train of the day on the 1010 to Cardiff Central, woop!

It's clearly been ages since I passed through Cwmbran and looked out of the window, as I note there's a Morrisons almost right next to the station now. That's gotta be convenient for bashes! My next train is a pair of 150s, 150126 and 150233, on the 1100 Cardiff Central to Taunton, which I'm on from Newport to Bristol Temple Meads. I had hoped for a winner 150 with FGW, as I had cleared the FGW fleet (sight and haulage) years ago but the reforming and what not of the former LM 150s has given me a lot of 150s to find across the country now. At least since this trip happened I've only got 150202 and 150921 to see to re-finish the class for sight again, who knows how long that'll take to do. Another FoSS rover may be needed, and I honestly thought I'd never need to do one of those again. Maybe I'll try for some of them when I'm next in Cornwall. Which reminds me of another trip I need to fit in somewhere this year. Don't know how I'm going to get it all in, domestic rail wise I've estimated there to be at least 15 trips to do and I do have to go to work as well. Something's going to have to give...Anyway, back at the ranch...

Time to read the Metro and it's such a lovely day today! Arrival into Bristol Temple Meads is bang on time at 1152, and I've somehow lost my pen. Again, how often this is happening is getting silly! I get 69506, a First Bristol bus, on route A1 to Bristol Airport and get there at 1227. I figure I'd best check when the flight leaves, and that I've got all my paperwork with me. Dang, the flight is at 1715, I thought it was 1625, this is going to be a boring wait...I'm hungry by now, so it's the usual sub from Subway. I end up needing to top it up at Burger King later mind, but it's a holiday, it has to be done and the diet can wait until I go back to work. Easiest diet in the world too, eat absolutely jack all then go to work all day in a physical job. Eat a fair amount when getting home 10+ hours after leaving, then sleep and repeat. Was working quite well to be honest, in one week I shedded 4 pounds of weight. I've given up on it for the time being mind, one of my key reasons for the diet has been abandoned for now. Anyway...A coffee from Soho Coffee Co gets me another loyalty card for my wallet, and a bottle of water is sourced for the flight. Eventually boarding commences at 1648, doors closed at 1705 and pushback at 1710. We're held in a queue so takeoff isn't for several minutes but eventually we're up on easyjet's G-EZFV. Can't believe it's been 4 months and 11 days since my last flight, going to have to change that and make more regular flights! It's no surprise then that the Tune of the Day is Let's Fly by Styles and Breeze!

Now bring on Newcastle! The flight goes smoothly and we arrive at 1815. More precise details not available as I'd lost my watch not too long ago and it's not been replaced yet. So I've been using the phone for time telling or asking people, which is a major inconvenience for me. At the Metro station, I discover there's a major line closure between Byker and North Shields on at the moment. Going to have to come back one day to fix that gap then, and it's a significant amount too so my atlas will look annoyingly blank in that bit until I do it. Good enough reason for me to get on Skyscanner ASAP and book another flight to Newcastle for it, or at the least some sensibly priced Advance fares on the trains! A single to cover all 3 zones on the Metro is got for £3.20, which I consider not too bad really. Refurbished 4072 and 4046 are on the 1842 from the airport to South Hylton, both winners :) Shame it's dark, can't see much about. Got to be said that the refurbished Metro trains are far better looking than the unrefurbished ones that I used last in 2009!

It's a 30 minute journey through Newcastle to get to Heworth, and I give up trying to understand the map on my phone so get a taxi to Whitemare Pool Travelodge, at the cost of a fiver. At least I now know it's walkable, and got the gen on a good pub nearby that does food. After checking into my room and with home, I go to the pub [why I didn't write the name down I don't know! - Ed] and have a most delicious steak and Bombardier pie and vegetables. I also end up having three pints of Caulker from Jarrow Brewery, most awesome stuff! Back to the Travelodge then to chill out in front of the TV and get the books up to date. Been a good day but a lazy one too. Just what the doctor ordered then!

Days 2 and 3 will follow in due course!

With the engineering work on between Byker and North Shields, there were some interesting workings (mainly going between Manors and Byker on the wrong line and under guidance from a pilot man - something not seen everyday).

Indeed so, I had this on a leap to Byker on day 2, no doubt it'll be mentioned in the text for the relevant day. I will continue it soon, just I want to get the Brussels one done first. Noticed earlier I've a Greater Manchester Rail Ranger bash to write up too at some point, dang I'm going to be here for ages!
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Let's plough on now we've got 3 trip reports finished this week, I want to get this one moving with two full ones still to get started yet...

19th February 2013 - Tyne and Wear Metro Bash, Day 2

Phwoar, what a good sleep! After the morning coffee, de-rancifying and re-packing the bag, I leave for the walk to Heworth station. Rather brisk out here this morning, but also a beautiful day! The walk takes around 29 minutes, not bad for the distance and going uphill a fair amount too. Time to get a DaySaver for all zones at just £4.40 after getting some cash out. Good value that ticket is in my eyes. 4045 and 4027 start the bashing party on a South Hylton service, the first branch to get done today. Not much to comment on really with this move, other than it taking 34 minutes to do. After a quick photo, it's back on for a view of the line from what is now the back of the train, so I get to see the line but going backwards. It's off 4027 and 4045 at Sunderland for a breakfast move, which is in The William Jameson, found thanks to the Wetherspoon Pubfinder app. Most useful little app that, well worth a download. £2.09 for a bacon roll and coffee, bargain! Back at the station, it's a refurbished pair of Metro cars again, this time 4058 and 4029 bring some much needed ink on the relevant page of my NREAs to the party. Off we go to Pelaw on them, and I'm surprised just how well used the Metro is, rather full by the time we get half way to Pelaw!

66618 is seen heading south on tanks at St Peters, and Metro crews out in force at Pelaw on revenue protection work. Certainly got a few people in just the time I was waiting for my train to South Shields, wonder how many they must have got throughout the day. 4064 and 4048 provide yet another pair of winners onwards, and I just about manage to get a photo of 67020 on light engine duties as we leave [photos from this trip will be uploaded in due course, hence their missingness from this trip report- Ed], no idea where it was going though. I head to The Would Have, another Wetherspoon, for a coffee here and it's only £1.29 for a large one. Bargain if you ask me, especially as it's decent stuff. I get the free WiFi going on and check my emails. I see Eurostar wanted feedback on my recent journey with them. "That's not for a few weeks" I tell myself, but I check anyway and sure enough, I'd accidentally booked the 15th of February not 15th of March with Eurostar. You don't need to know the string of expletives that went through my mind when I saw that and realised that was a hard-earned £50 wasted! Back at the station, the first dud Metro car of the entire trip is paired with winner 4049. Must have had 4041 years ago on a Newcastle to Sunderland trip in connection with a GC bash I suspect. Never mind, on we go for the endurance trip of the day, South Shields to North Shields via Newcastle!

Yes I could have simply got the ferry, but I didn't fancy that plus it's more mileage this way! I don't note much on this journey, although by the time we get to Longbenton I'm looking forward to getting off! North Shields station is quite impressive looking just from the platforms, didn't bother looking outside. 4041 and 4049 are taken for a leap around the coast to Whitley Bay, where it's lunchtime. You may have noticed a pattern going on, by now it'll be obvious but I'm off to another Wetherspoon, this time The Fire Station. It's a mixed grill and a pint of Guiness for just £6.59 today, so very moreish! My day is made by hearing from one of my best friends, quite the lengthy phone call too :) I end up in B&M Bargains after lunch and get a 3L bottle of Dr Pepper and some mint KitKat Chunky bars for supplies today and tomorrow. Back into town we go then, eventually that is when the next train eventually shows up with 4022 and 4061. Would you be surprised if I told you they were both winners?

Monument, and apparently the next St James train isn't for 27 minutes and no gen on the next one to Byker. How incredibly helpful...I hear a train roll in on the St James platform though eventually, don't know why it didn't turn up on the PIS but I scoop in 4083 and 4002 on a leap up the road. As a NUFC man, I've always wanted to come here for a home game, alas I cannot leave that bit in my atlas any longer! One day I'll return...Back on 4002 and 4083 for the leap to Byker next, and we wait for departure time for ages. It's only to Byker because, as you may recall, there's a major line closure on between Byker and North Shields. At Manors we run wrong line in order to be able to come back from Byker, so we pick up a pilotman and have to SPAD the signal. That's the Metro track I can do on this trip done then, and I have plenty of hours left this afternoon. Looks like it's to be a lot of leaping and scooping then! 4083 and 4002 cart me back to Monument for one more time, and I go upstairs to actually see Newcastle city centre for the first time ever. Been to Newcastle plenty of times but never beyond the station. I end up next in the Mile Castle and have a very nom nom nom pint of Marcle Hill cider. Well recommended!

I get lost several times looking for The Keel Row, eventually I put my data signal back on and find out it's inside the cinema complex. No wonder I couldn't find it then! I try Strongbow Pear for the first time here, very nice too [shame it wasn't nice in the cans of it I had a while after! - Ed], after which it's to the next Wetherspoon. You may have noticed I decided to fill up my Wetherspoon Directory as much as I could whilst up here  I do a leap to Haymarket, alas I only just make it to the station for the next train and fail to note the numbers before or after getting it! That's one I'm not adding to RailMiles then  A lush double beefburger and chips with a pint of Guiness is had for tea from The Five Swans, my 6th Wetherspoon in one day by my count! Back at the station, I get 4021 and 4050 both winning on a shack scratch leap to Jesmond. Dud 4058 and 4029 take me to another winning shack at West Jesmond, for winning 4044 and 4078 forward to Ilford Road with only short waiting times everywhere at the moment. 4040 and 4084 take me to South Gosforth, and 4060 and 4081 take me on a much longer (than the last few leaps at least!) leap to Gateshead Stadium.

4067 and 4039 cart me forward to Felling for one last shack scratch for my last pair of winners with 4042 and 4089 on the insect leap to Heworth. It's 1906 now, fair games the time went by fast! It's time for a 30 minute walk to the Travelodge now, and it's chill out time in front of the TV. By 2320 I'm falling asleep whilst trying to watch Rude Tube, so off the TV goes!

20th February 2013 - Tyne and Wear Metro Bash, Day 3

An excellent sleep is had until 0659, after which the brain is too awake to doss properly until 0800 when the alarm does an excellent job of waking me up. The morning coffee is had as is some more TV. 0900 comes around and it's time to leave for some proper trains today! The lengthy walk to the station is had again today, a bit brisk again today but the exercise does me good in my eyes. Especially since I've not had much exercise lately when I've been away from work! A couple of winners for sight are had after getting my single to Newcastle for £2.50. Still something like 38 of 90 to get for sight with the Metro cars, and 4054 is with 4008 for a pair of winning hauliers this morning. Some serious progress with the Tyne and Wear Metro fleet has been had on this trip, it must be said! Greggs is visited for breakfast, and I get a bacon and sausage roll with a coffee for just £2. Went down incredibly well too! I visit Sainsburys Local for some supplies, and a coffee is again deemed necessary so I end up in Pumpkin [I know, not Costa for a change! - Ed] for a medium Americano. To my surprise, my first train of the cross-country trip arrives with almost 10 minutes to get everyone on! :o

220006 it is then on the 1044 to Plymouth (interesting that there would have been a Plymouth train due from Bristol Temple Meads at that same time), and it's the first tunes since Monday evening now. Music to my ears, quite literally! Now let's belt it down the ECML! I read the Metro, which takes its usual short time, and to my extreme surprise there were no DMUs in the bay platforms at Darlington. Most the opposite to my usual experience at this station. 37425 qnd 37688 are seen on the Down Slow a bit after Northallerton on a train of rails by the looks of it, a welcome sight! York, and I wander around briefly seeing what sights for the year I can get, then it's off to platform 10 for my train to Manchester Piccadilly. Damn it, it's 185149, dud. Morale is raised shortly after York though when I finally scoop Colas' 66848 for sight on the sidings, another 66 has finally got the required bit of ink next to it in my books! 16 more to see so far, don't want to even think about how many times I've got that close to finishing the 66s for sight. Every time I get close (12 I think is my closest), more get renumbered!

It's deemed to be lunchtime at Leeds, where I see a London train was cancelled. A lot of people have been put on our train instead to Manchester, which seemed odd to me but I didn't know of the major problems in the Peterborough area at the time. Somehow we're 7 minutes late away from Huddersfield, with only a +9 or so at Manchester Piccadilly I see my train going without me! Still, when we get to my preferred side of the Pennines I do smile. Fortunately we arrive with about 6 minutes between one train and the other, so off I charge to make it onto 175116 on the 1330 home. I thought I was almost at the magical thou with this 175 before, clearly I've been mistaken. Not far off it now by the time I get home at least (896 miles I believe the count came to). Bored I am now though on my train home, and getting really tired. Surely I should have recovered all of the lost sleep from the last few weeks by now? If I had any change on me I'd buy a coffee! It's also time for my first Creme Egg of the year :) Back on home territory at Shrewsbury, feels like a different world to Newcastle! After spending so much of today with music in my ears, I'm in dire need of new tunes on my MP3 player [thank Goodness I can have a huge variety on YouTube whilst doing these trip reports I say! - Ed], been a long time since I changed the content of my playlist.

Arrival into Ludlow signals the last 20 minutes or so of the bash, it would have been so much better if I'd had coffee during this leg. To be fair, it's been a long time since I finished my last one around 1100! Exactly 5 hours after leaving Newcastle, 6 from leaving Heworth, I arrive back at Hereford at 1544. A walk to the bus station kills some time before the very last leg of the bash on YJ05 WCW home. All in all, an excellent bash, shame it's over already and that it's back to work on Friday. Bring on the next bash I say!

Questions, comments, constructive criticism always welcome as is usual :)

Well played Sir, well played. :)

One question regarding the signal passed at danger at Manors though if I may. Yonks ago before even Palmersville station was built I remember being in the front seat and due to signalling problems around Benton we had to pass a signal at danger on the way to Shiremoor but the speed was limited to around 20 to 30km/h or so. Anything above that sounded an alarm in the cab necessitating a brake application to check the speed. Did the wrong line movement from Manors to Byker also require a slow speed trundle across the viaduct or was it close to normal speed.

Just curious really.

Thanks

The track magnets are set to the line speed restriction in that area, but there will be a special set up for engineering work (IIRC over-riding a magnet is 5 kmh, but I'll have to check). As far as I'm aware the speed across to Byker was normal (certainly did feel like it).

Complicated situation in the way that the signalling and information screens are set up. The screens will only show a train as due when the driver has set the route in the cab and has pressed the Ready to Start button, which means at stations near to terminii, it doesn't show on the screens until a few minutes before it arrives (Monument platform 3 is the best example).

Ah, now that's an interesting observation techni/142. I've noticed the same thing happen at Park Lane on the South Hylton branch where no northbound trains show up on the info boards until close to their arrival. I've almost turned about and headed to Central on foot for the train on a couple of occasions.

Regarding the bit to Byker, felt reasonable speed on it,maybe those magnets were deactivated for the works, hence a pilotman?

Ah right,I see with regards to the PIS systems. As an outsider,I was left with a less than positive feeling about the running of the Metro there. There were enough announcements about the works up there that week, would it have hurt to have some saying when the next train was?

It has been a problem for years, and don't think anyone has an answer. I suppose putting up timetable info (e.g. train timetabled to arrive in 2m etc) could work but hasn't been done as far as I know.

As for the wrong line between Manors and Byker - the magnets should only work in one direction, so unless they put a temporary one in, the train could in effect run to line speed. The pilotman will of course tell the driver what speed to go.

Interesting report. I used to "bash" (if that is the word) the Metro, well ride around the loop or from Shields to Bank Foot back in the 1980s when a child single cost 10p. Obviously had to bag the front (or back) seat. Can remember racing a 37s (or pair of) on oil tankers in the Hebburn/Tyne dock area, and the growl of the tractors. At the time, the "proper" trains (pacers and 1st gen dmus) at Heworth seemed exotic and exciting.
