Hi,

I'm new to using the forum so apologies if this has already been posted a while ago.
I wondered if anybody knew what (if anything) was happening with the Tees Valley Metro project. I read a year or so ago that the project has been shelved but I notice that several elements from the project such as the new station at James Cook Hospital and station improvements at Thornaby and Eaglescliffe have come to fruition.

Just wondered whether certain aspects of it were still planned to go ahead.

Thanks in Advance :)

Station improvements at eaglescliffe were probably tied in with money from Grand Central and the owner of chester-le-track more than any metro project. IIRC the opening up of the weardale route and running trains through to darlington was also going to tie in to th metro idea. The bridge across the tees next to the arriva bus garage has been done but as you say nothing further has been done with the old rail bridge simply being abandoned and the quite ridiculous slew for bowesfield junction on the original formation. The route through tees yard was also supposed to be diverted to open up the former depot site for redevelopment but again nothing seems to have been done apart from relocating the two gronks that were baing picked apart piece by piece by local scrap yuppies!

I think with the local steel industry now effectively dead there doesnt appear to be the money in the area to invest as there is a shortage of jobs to fuel the area. I fear the will has lost its way which is a pity as projects such as the metro scheme and the redevelopment of tees yard would encourage jobs and industry investment. Trouble is we are too reactive in this country, prefering to spend money on viability and value for money studies and talk about what needs to be done so much that when it comes to action, theres no money left to pay for it. The cancelled housing project in nearby Ferryhill's Dean Bank area and at the Ferryhill Station site is testament to this waste, as is the abandoned "new" pointwork alongside Bowesfield Junction.....
